Rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, higher oil prices, Thursday's losses on Wall Street, and U.S. President Trump's announcement imposing a 15% tariff on imported polysilicon derivative products triggered a volatile session in Taiwan's stock market today (7th). The index surged over 400 points in early trading but rapidly reversed, turning negative and plunging more than 100 points to reach 44,217. The market remains entrenched in a battle to defend its quarterly moving average, with estimated trading volume continuing to shrink to approximately NT$900 billion.
Among heavyweight stocks, TSMC (2330-TW) opened at NT$2,390, up NT$25 or 1.06%, but retreated to test the flat line during morning trading. MediaTek (2454-TW) briefly rose over 2%, reclaiming the NT$4,000 level, while Delta Electronics (2308-TW), Hon Hai (2317-TW), and TPSC (2383-TW) weakened.
Yageo (2327-TW) and United Microelectronics (2303-TW) fell by 3%, as the memory sector corrected again. Winbond (2344-TW) and Macronix (2337-TW) dropped 4%, Wintek (3036-TW) plunged 9%, and Hua Hong (2313-TW), Caiyu (6789-TW), and Jingshuo (3189-TW) all declined by 3%.
Following President Trump's announcement of a 15% tariff on imported polysilicon derivative products, most silicon wafer-related stocks declined. While Hopax (6103-TW), GlobalWafers (6488-TW), and Taiseng Scientific (3532-TW) held above the flat line, Sino-American Silicon (5483-TW), Greatek (3016-TW), and Asia Silicon (6182-TW) all fell around 3%.
Among high-priced stocks, chip packaging leader Chuan Lu (2059-TW) gapped up to hit the daily limit at NT$11,110, setting a new record high. Yingwei (6515-TW) rose nearly half the daily limit, and Hong Jing (7769-TW) and Jian Ce (3653-TW) also gained. However, Quanta Computer (8210-TW) crashed to the daily limit down, while Accton (2345-TW) and Molex-KY (3665-TW) tumbled 6-7%.
Additionally, Aptina (6531-TW) rose over 6%, while Lianmao (6213-TW) and Yingwei (6515-TW) gained over 4%. With international oil prices surging, the Formosa Plastics Group's four major companies advanced, with Formosa Chemicals & Fibre (6505-TW) gaining over 3% and Far Eastern New Century (1402-TW) up 2%. The financial sector also showed resilience against the broader market weakness.
