According to Seeking Alpha, Tesla (TSLA-US) confirmed on Thursday (the 6th) that its large-scale chip manufacturing campus, Terafab, will be located in Grimes County, Texas. The company broke ground in April this year on a research-focused wafer fabrication facility at the northern part of its Texas Gigafactory (Giga Texas), which it says will serve as the precursor to Terafab. Initial investment amounts to $16.8 billion.

Simply put, Terafab is a planned mega semiconductor manufacturing campus jointly developed by Tesla, SpaceX (SPCX-US), and xAI, aiming to produce advanced AI chips at an unprecedented scale.

Terafab is designed as a vertically integrated 'chip city,' integrating key processes such as chip design, wafer manufacturing, memory production, advanced packaging, and testing within a single campus—rather than dispersing them across different companies and facilities, as is currently standard in the industry.

Its goal is to generate over 1 terawatt of AI computing power annually, supplying chips needed for Tesla's electric vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots, while also supporting SpaceX and xAI's planned space-based AI data centers and solar satellites.

Looking ahead, Musk-affiliated companies aim to significantly reduce the cost of AI chips through large-scale vertical integration of chip design and manufacturing, narrowing the gap between current global chip supply shortages and future massive demand.

The company stated, 'The number of chips required by Tesla and SpaceX will far exceed the current and future global supply capacity. Therefore, we are building the largest chip manufacturing facility in history, targeting the production of over 1 terawatt of AI computing power annually.'

Analysts initially believe that Terafab's large-scale investment could drive demand in the semiconductor equipment supply chain, with companies such as Intel (INTC-US), ASML (ASML-US), Applied Materials (AMAT-US), Lam Research (LRCX-US), and KLA Corporation (KLAC-US) potentially benefiting.
