Apple's first foldable iPhone has not yet been unveiled, but the product roadmap for its third generation has already been exposed. Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman recently revealed in his 'Power On' newsletter that Apple is already planning its third-generation foldable iPhone, expected to launch as early as 2028. This new model will feature larger internal and external displays compared to the first two generations.

Based on the current timeline, the first-generation foldable iPhone is expected to debut next month, the second generation is scheduled for 2027, and the third generation could follow as early as 2028. This marks the first time the industry has seen a concrete timeline for a 'third-generation' foldable iPhone.

Gurman noted that the first-generation model will feature an external display of approximately 5.5 inches and an internal display of around 7.8 inches. If the third generation continues this trend of enlargement, the overall visible screen area will reach a new level, although Gurman did not disclose specific dimensions.

Hardware details for the first generation are also emerging: an ultra-thin body, a return to Touch ID instead of Face ID, the A20 chip, and Apple’s self-developed C2 modem. The device may be named 'iPhone Ultra' and is expected to start at $2,000.

Apple has already approved development of the second-generation 'Ultra 2,' which is likely to retain the same display configuration as the first. It is expected to launch in autumn 2027, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. The third-generation foldable iPhone, however, is positioned as the true evolution of the 'large-screen experience.'

Industry insiders interpret this as a clear signal that Apple does not view the foldable iPhone as a one-off trial product. The first generation focuses on perfecting the book-style folding mechanism, nearly invisible crease, and high-durability hinge. The second generation continues this design while aligning with the 20th-anniversary flagship. The third generation will differentiate itself through significantly larger screens.

Supply chain sources indicate Apple has recently raised its shipment forecasts for foldable devices in 2026 and 2027. Mass production of the first generation is set to begin in late July 2025, and the market is closely watching the September launch event to see whether the 'Ultra' pricing and design can reshape the high-end smartphone landscape.
