According to reports, the Trump administration has recently been contemplating publicly declaring an end to hostilities once Iran fully restores navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Trump has even stated that he would not rule out directly ending the war, even if a nuclear agreement is ultimately not reached. However, Iran's announcement on the 8th of new conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz has introduced complications into the U.S. plan to conclude the conflict.
The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that Trump privately told senior aides he would be willing to withdraw from the war even without a nuclear deal, provided Iran fully restores navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iran's recent demands for the U.S. to pay billions of dollars in compensation and to fully withdraw American troops from the Middle East have thrown the original U.S. exit strategy into disarray.
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, stated in a declaration that the U.S. must 'correct its behavior' before Iran would consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
He outlined six conditions: ceasing what he described as threats against Iran's Supreme Leader, permanently halting military actions against Iran and its regional allies, withdrawing U.S. naval and air forces involved in what he called the 'blockade of Iran,' compensating Iran for losses incurred in recent conflicts, lifting U.S. sanctions, and unfreezing Iran's frozen assets.
The Wall Street Journal noted that these demands represent the most stringent conditions Iran has set so far for restoring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
