The wave of ultra-wealthy investors acquiring sports assets has gained a new chapter, as a consortium involving Amazon (AMZN-US) founder Jeff Bezos is close to finalizing a deal to purchase around one-third of Premier League powerhouse Liverpool FC.

According to UK media outlet Sky News on Tuesday the 11th, the transaction could be announced as early as this week.

The consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia was previously a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers but divested all his shares last month to avoid regulatory complications.

Besides Bezos, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is also part of the investor group.

The acquisition of nearly 30% of Liverpool’s equity by Bezos and other billionaires will inevitably fuel speculation about their long-term ambition to become majority owners.

Bezos has had no prior ties to football, but media reports indicate he previously considered bidding for NFL teams Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, as well as NBA’s Boston Celtics—none of which materialized.

According to the Forbes billionaire list, Bezos’ net worth stands at $280 billion, ranking third globally; Saverin’s is $33 billion; and Mittal’s is $33.6 billion.

Their investment values Liverpool FC at $6 billion, making it one of the highest-valued transactions in sports history.

The club’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group, took over in 2010 for just £300 million (approximately $405 million). Fenway last monetized part of its stake in 2023, selling a minority share to U.S. private equity firm Dynasty Equity at a $4.5 billion valuation.

The soaring valuation highlights Fenway’s successful stewardship. Since taking control, Liverpool has won two Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League title. The 2019–20 season marked Liverpool’s first top-flight English league title in 30 years since 1990, and their first ever in the 'Premier League era'.
