Russia's key Black Sea port of Novorossiysk has come under a large-scale drone attack by Ukraine, damaging three major grain terminals in the region. As Ukraine intensifies strikes on Russian maritime infrastructure, the conflict is now directly threatening global food supply chains.
According to Bloomberg, citing informed sources, the damaged facilities include the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal (NKHP), operated by United Grain Co., where a loading/unloading gantry collapsed during the attack. Additionally, the gantry and truck unloading facilities at the Novorossiysk Grain Terminal (NZT), owned by Demetra, as well as the KSK grain terminal, were also affected.
Satellite imagery from NASA detected thermal anomalies in the area, indicating fires near the grain terminals and the adjacent naval base.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the operation specifically targeted the Novorossiysk naval base—the last major stronghold of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. He emphasized that as long as Russia's aggression continues, none of its military-supporting infrastructure will be safe, and he reiterated calls for a diplomatic resolution to end the war.
The attack coincides with the harvest season. Russia and Ukraine together account for over a quarter of global wheat exports. Damage to port facilities has sparked market fears of supply shortages, pushing July wheat prices to their highest level in two years.
Ukraine's actions are seen as part of a broader strategy to weaken Russia's economic and military capabilities by targeting energy and export assets—including refineries, export terminals, and pipelines—in an effort to force Moscow back to negotiations.
Currently, companies including KSK and NZT have declined to comment, while Russian port authorities and the Ukrainian military have not provided further details on the attack.
