Social media platform Reddit (RDDT-US) will officially be added to the S&P 500 index, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Thursday (13th). Reddit will become a constituent of the S&P 500 before the U.S. market opens on August 18, 2026. Following the announcement, the stock surged over 8.8% in after-hours trading, reflecting the market’s rapid response to anticipated passive investment demand from index inclusion.
In this index reshuffle, Reddit will replace AvalonBay Communities (AVB-US), which is being acquired by Equity Residential (EQR-US), another S&P 500 member. In other words, AvalonBay’s removal from the index is not due to fundamental or market cap changes, but rather a result of corporate acquisition. Reddit’s inclusion will take effect before the market opens on August 18, 2026.
S&P Dow Jones Indices also announced that Sun Communities (SUI-US) will join the S&P MidCap 400 index, effective before market open on August 20, 2026. This adjustment means Reddit will gain greater market visibility as part of the benchmark for large-cap U.S. companies, while Sun Communities will enter a key mid-cap benchmark index.
Reddit’s inclusion in the S&P 500 comes at a time of rapid fundamental growth, though recent stock volatility has been high. Last week, Reddit reported its Q2 2026 earnings, with revenue reaching $805 million, up 61% year-over-year—the eighth consecutive quarter of over 60% revenue growth. Advertising revenue hit $762 million, up 64% annually, driven by higher ad prices and increased impressions. The company posted a net profit of $253 million in Q2, or $1.25 per share, far exceeding the prior-year figures of $89 million and $0.45 per share.
Reddit’s daily active users (DAU) rose 18% year-over-year to 130.3 million in Q2, with U.S. DAU growing only 6% while international markets surged 28%. Slowing user growth in the U.S. has become a key investor concern. The company noted that search engine traffic has become more volatile due to algorithmic changes, particularly shifts in Google’s search environment, increasing uncertainty around Reddit’s traffic.
Despite clearly outperforming market expectations in Q2, Reddit’s stock initially dropped after the earnings release, primarily due to investor concerns over search traffic and U.S. user growth. At the time, the company forecast Q3 revenue of $860 million to $870 million, above the analyst consensus of approximately $828.4 million. Adjusted EBITDA was projected at $385 million to $395 million.
Reddit is also actively improving ad monetization efficiency. U.S. revenue in Q2 reached $638 million, up 56% year-over-year, while international revenue hit $167 million, up 84%. The company’s average revenue per user (ARPU) continues to rise, reaching $6.18 globally in Q2—demonstrating strong monetization capability despite slowing user growth in certain markets.
AI search and content licensing represent another key variable for Reddit’s future. The company faces pressure from AI chatbots and search engine summarization features potentially diverting traditional search traffic, while simultaneously leveraging AI to enhance ad content generation and targeting precision. Reddit has already established content or AI-related partnerships with companies like Alphabet (GOOGL-US) and OpenAI, but investors continue to monitor whether the company can convert its vast community content into stable AI licensing revenue.
The S&P 500 inclusion is symbolically significant for Reddit. The S&P 500 is one of the most important benchmark indices in the U.S. stock market, with numerous index funds and ETFs tracking it. When a company is added to the index, passive funds tracking it must adjust their holdings according to the new weightings, leading markets to often front-run the inclusion effect. This typically results in higher trading volume and price volatility for the stock ahead of the official effective date.
Reddit’s addition also reflects the ongoing evolution of the S&P 500’s composition. In June 2026, S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Marvell Technology (MRVL-US) and Flex (FLEX-US) would join the index, highlighting continued market focus on large tech, semiconductor, and emerging digital companies within U.S. benchmarks. S&P Dow Jones Indices is the index arm of S&P Global (SPGI-US), managing key market benchmarks like the S&P 500.
More notably, Reddit’s inclusion coincides with the broader market at record highs. On Thursday (13th), the S&P 500 rose 0.65%, closing at 7,798.99—a new all-time high—and up approximately 14% year-to-date in 2026. Rising tech stocks and cooling inflation have improved market expectations for Federal Reserve policy, driving the broader rally.
Therefore, Reddit’s S&P 500 inclusion is more than just a component change—it could serve as a significant short-term catalyst for the stock. The after-hours surge of over 8.8% already reflects this, but the company still faces challenges including slowing U.S. user growth, search traffic volatility, and AI-driven shifts in web traffic distribution. As the August 18 inclusion date approaches, the market will closely watch whether passive inflows can sustain the stock price and whether investors will refocus on fundamentals—revenue, user, and profit growth—after the index effect fades.
