According to mainland media reports, the Chinese version of WeChat has recently conducted a major functional expansion of its native AI assistant 'Xiao Wei'. In the latest limited test, WeChat added AI entry points in multiple high-frequency usage scenarios, bringing the total number of AI integrations within the app to 16.

This update marks a strategic move by messaging platforms to deeply embed generative AI into users’ everyday lives, covering areas such as information filtering, social interaction, and multimedia processing.

In terms of content acquisition and information management, WeChat has introduced an 'AI Summary' feature on the official account message page. A Xiao Wei icon has been added to the far left of the 'Accounts I Follow' section. Upon clicking, the system automatically compiles recent updates from subscribed accounts into concise summaries, helping users quickly identify core messages amid vast amounts of information. Additionally, an entry point has been added at the bottom of individual official account articles, enabling instant summarization of long-form content.

For community interaction, the 'Moments' (friend circle) feature has undergone significant intelligent upgrades. When browsing friends’ posts, users can now long-press text to invoke 'AI Comment Suggestions'. The system analyzes the content and provides reference comments in various styles.

When creating a post, the 'AI Assist Writing' function understands content based on uploaded images, generates multiple draft captions, and directly fills them into the posting interface—eliminating the need to copy and paste across applications.

In tool-based applications and visual processing, WeChat has enhanced image and voice interaction experiences:

Image Processing: When viewing images in chat, a new 'AI Processing' option allows direct image enhancement, key information extraction, or partial edits.

Visual Q&A: A new 'Take Photo for AI' entry has been added to the 'Scan' page, supporting brand recognition and follow-up queries. For foreign-language product packaging, it also offers translation, text extraction, and content summarization.

Voice Commands: A new 'Command' function has been added to the chat input box. Users can press and hold the input field to speak specific requests (e.g., 'polish this text,' 'translate,' or 'write a reply'), and the AI will generate contextually appropriate messages and send them directly.

Beyond AI enhancements, WeChat has also optimized basic services, including enabling direct money transfers via phone number or bank card, and allowing users to delete the system prompt 'You retracted a message' after message recall.

However, regarding the widely anticipated 'Moments post editing' feature, WeChat officially gave a clear rejection. The company stated that Moments was designed for casual sharing, and allowing repeated refinement would turn sharing into an operational burden. Therefore, 'Moments will never launch a post-editing function.'

The official recommendation is that if users spot errors after posting, they can use the 'Edit Again' button that appears after deletion to quickly correct the content.

According to reports, all these new AI features are currently in a limited testing phase, available only to a randomly selected subset of users. Whether they will be fully rolled out depends on the official release of a final version.
