According to data released on Wednesday, August 19, by the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of Chinese visitors to Japan during the first seven months of 2024 dropped 56.3% compared to the same period last year.

In July alone, Chinese tourist arrivals fell 56.1% year-on-year, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline.

The downturn follows remarks made by Prime Minister Takagi Shinao regarding Taiwan, after which Chinese outbound travel to Japan has continued to weaken. As reported by the Nikkei on August 19, Chinese tourists accounted for 10.1% of total foreign visitors to Japan in the first seven months of 2024, significantly down from 22.8% during the same period in 2025.

Total foreign visitor numbers to Japan are also trending downward. If current trends continue, the annual number of inbound tourists in 2026 could fall below the previous year’s level—the first decline in five years.
