The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is not only triggering a new wave of cyberattacks but also forcing enterprises to increase their cybersecurity spending. CrowdStrike (CRWD-US) and Okta (OKTA-US) saw their stock prices surge 18% and 222%, respectively, during Thursday’s (27th) trading session. Both companies reported second-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street expectations and raised their financial forecasts, citing threats from AI agents.

At the time of reporting, CrowdStrike (CRWD-US) was up 18.71%, trading at $224.58 per share, while Okta (OKTA-US) surged 22.95% to $165.28 per share.

The rally extended across the broader cybersecurity sector, with Palo Alto Networks (PANW-US), SailPoint (SAIL-US), and Rubrik (RBRK-US) all rising approximately 9%.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated during Wednesday’s earnings call that the cybersecurity market is in an 'arms race.' AI is enabling more sophisticated cyberattacks, prompting companies to allocate larger security budgets and accelerating the market’s elimination of vendors unable to deliver effective solutions.

Kurtz noted that CrowdStrike’s Falcon Flex platform, which allows customers to swap different security tools, has doubled in business scale year-over-year. Recent events such as the launch of advanced AI models like Mythos by Anthropic and the hacking of OpenAI-backed Hugging Face have heightened risks for the cybersecurity industry, forcing enterprises to expand their defenses against the growing number of attacks launched by AI agents.

One major beneficiary is identity security tools, which help organizations manage and protect the rapidly increasing number of AI agents. This rising demand has pushed cybersecurity stocks to new highs, with both CrowdStrike and Okta seeing share price gains exceeding 80%.

Okta CEO Todd McKinnon said the company’s new products have achieved initial success, accounting for nearly one-third of total order value in Q2. While enterprise adoption of AI-powered security tools remains in early stages, momentum is building, and the company secured dozens of AI-related deals in the second quarter.

Following the earnings release, Bank of America upgraded Okta’s investment rating from 'Underperform' to 'Neutral,' citing accelerating AI-related business growth. The bank found early customer traction and AI opportunities encouraging, though adoption remains low, disclosed data is limited, and management does not expect AI to significantly impact fiscal 2027 results—suggesting limited upside for further stock gains.

The earnings reports from CrowdStrike and Okta mark the start of the cybersecurity sector’s earnings season. Palo Alto Networks and Zscaler (ZS-US) are scheduled to report next week. Deutsche Bank remains optimistic about the cybersecurity industry’s growth prospects in the AI era but is waiting for subsequent earnings to confirm whether recent demand strength is sustainable.
