Micro LED manufacturer PlayNitride-KY (6854-TW) held its 2026 Micro LED Technology Forum today (1st), where Chairman Li Yun-Li announced that the company has begun shipping large-format Micro LED screens and modules, with benefits expected to materialize by late 2025 through early 2026. The company is also aggressively expanding into optical communications, aiming to replace traditional copper wires in short-distance data transmission by leveraging its advantages in low power consumption and parallel data transfer.
Chairman Li Yun-Li noted that while the automotive market is currently facing headwinds, impacting second-half operations, large-format Micro LED packaging technology and commercial screen tiling applications have already entered the shipment phase. The financial impact is expected to gradually emerge from year-end 2025 into the first half of 2026. Additionally, optical communication applications are currently undergoing joint verification with multiple international major manufacturers, with large-scale commercialization anticipated within two years.
Li emphasized that as AI drives exponential growth in data transmission, traditional copper wires face physical limitations when transmission speeds reach 3.2T, particularly in transmission distance. While individual Micro LED chips are slower than laser components, their ability to achieve parallel transmission through array configurations results in significantly lower power consumption per bit in short-distance transmission—outperforming both copper and lasers. Furthermore, their wide emission angles greatly reduce fiber alignment costs, offering strong competitive advantages for replacement.
On the large-display front, PlayNitride is advancing its Micro LED packaging technology to enable customers to use standard pick-and-place equipment for assembling large tiled displays. This dramatically lowers production barriers and manufacturing costs, accelerating the replacement of high-end projectors and commercial display screens, while driving continuous growth in chip shipments.
Regarding emerging display applications such as wearables and augmented reality (AR), Li stated that PlayNitride’s smartwatch displays have already reduced power consumption by 50% compared to previous generations, with performance expected to surpass OLED specifications by the second half of 2027. For AR glasses, full-color monolithic Micro LED is seen as the inevitable industry trend, with major international brands expected to launch related end-user products in the coming years.
On Samsung Electronics’ shift in TV outsourcing strategy, Li explained this as a routine transformation driven by brand manufacturers seeking production efficiency. While supply chain adjustments may cause a short transition and certification period of several months, core materials and chips will continue to be stably supplied by PlayNitride, providing long-term positive benefits for overall business development.
In response to U.S. requirements for non-red supply chains in optical communication products, Li stressed that optical communications involve highly sensitive international regulatory standards. The company has established strict market segmentation mechanisms in both R&D and production lines to fully comply with European and American customer regulations.
