President Lai: Taiwan Fertilizer Supports High-Tech Industry Resilience, Advances Hydrogen and Ammonia Energy to Inject New Momentum into Industries

President Lai Ching-te attended the 'Taiwan Fertilizer 80th Anniversary Celebration' today (3rd), stating that in the face of global climate change, energy transition, and shifting industrial environments, Taiwan Fertilizer (1722-TW) has not only continued its transformation in recent years but has also extended its existing technologies and experience into the fields of chemicals, electronic chemicals, circular economy, and clean energy. He particularly highlighted the company's use of waste sulfuric acid recovery, purification, and reuse technology from semiconductor back-end processes to support Taiwan's high-tech industries, and its active development of hydrogen-ammonia and low-carbon ammonia—green clean energy solutions—to inject new momentum into industrial development.

In his speech, President Lai noted that for many years, Taiwan Fertilizer has worked closely with agricultural cooperatives and farmers at production sites, helping farmers apply fertilizers more precisely through fertilizer training sessions and field trials, thereby balancing production efficiency with land sustainability. Thanks to Taiwan Fertilizer's support, Taiwan's agriculture has continued to develop, providing a solid foundation that sustains the nation's industrial and commercial sectors and underpins the growth of its high-tech industries. The president praised the hard work of Taiwan Fertilizer's employees, emphasizing that their contributions extend beyond agriculture and are vital to the nation's economy and future development.

President Lai added that during the pandemic, Taiwan faced tight supplies and rising prices of international fertilizer raw materials. Taiwan Fertilizer collaborated with the government to ensure stable domestic fertilizer supply and pricing, allowing farmers to cultivate with confidence. Furthermore, in response to recent energy transitions and industrial changes, Taiwan Fertilizer has continuously advanced its transformation, extending its expertise into chemicals and electronic chemicals. The company's waste sulfuric acid recovery, purification, and reuse technology from semiconductor back-end processes has significantly supported Taiwan's high-tech industries. Additionally, its strategic investments in hydrogen-ammonia and low-carbon ammonia—clean energy solutions—are injecting new momentum into industrial development.

President Lai emphasized that the government will continue to protect the foundation of agriculture while enhancing quality and creating value, leading Taiwan's agriculture onto the global stage. Currently, Taiwan's outward investment landscape has shifted significantly: in 2010, 83.8% of investments were directed to China, but by last year (2025), this had dropped to approximately 3.7%, with investments now flowing into Japan, the U.S., Europe, and other Indo-Pacific countries. Similarly, the share of Taiwan's agricultural exports to China has steadily declined—from 20.5% in 2015 to 11.5% last year—while the U.S. and Japan have become Taiwan's top two agricultural export markets, demonstrating the resilience of Taiwan's agriculture amid external changes.

Looking ahead, President Lai stated that the government will continue to assist agriculture in strengthening resilience and competitiveness. He expressed hope that Taiwan Fertilizer will continue to leverage its leadership and expertise to develop more green, eco-friendly materials suited to Taiwan's local soil and farming practices, deepen collaboration across agriculture, chemicals, high-tech, and energy sectors, and support the government's green transition initiatives to ensure Taiwan's sustainable and prosperous development.
