Taiwan Stock Exchange Chairman Lin Hsiu-Ming was recently invited to appear on a program interview, where he engaged in an in-depth discussion with host Hsieh Chin-Ho about the remarkable rise of the Taiwan stock market to historic highs and its future outlook.
During the interview, Lin highlighted that Taiwan, backed by its robust semiconductor and AI supply chains, has climbed to fifth place globally in terms of market capitalization, marking a transformative shift from a 'Technology Island' to a 'Capital Island'. In response to growing investor demand, the TWSE, under guidance from the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC), is planning to launch the 'Taiwan Stock Dashboard', featuring three core components aimed at enhancing market transparency and strengthening investor risk education to ensure the stability and security of Taiwan's capital markets.
Addressing public concerns over market risks and leverage levels, Lin emphasized that overall margin trading and leverage in the Taiwan stock market remain relatively healthy, with no signs of excessive expansion. According to actual data, as of July 2026, out of 14.6 million account holders, only about 290,000 had outstanding margin or unsecured loan balances, representing less than 2% of total accounts. Furthermore, from January to July 2026, margin trading on the main board accounted for just 6.09% of total trading value, while outstanding margin loans represented only 0.36% of the total market capitalization of listed stocks.
Investor default amounts have also remained extremely low. For example, on August 17, the total value of defaulted trades amounted to only NT$9.118 million, representing just 0.46 per 100,000 of total listed trading volume. The number of daily defaulters typically remains below 20, demonstrating the structural resilience and robustness of the Taiwan stock market.
Lin stated that the 'Taiwan Stock Dashboard' is designed to help investors conduct rational analysis and discussions during market volatility. It will primarily cover three core areas: data related to margin lending activities, investor default reporting statistics, and revenue and fundamental trends of listed and OTC companies. By presenting statistical data, charts, and trend lines, the dashboard aims to assist investors in observing market changes rationally.
In addition to transparency, the dashboard will clearly define all data points and indicators, enabling investors to fully understand the overall market landscape, practice sound investment and risk management, and properly manage their personal credit exposure.
Lin also shared a series of important future initiatives by the TWSE, including actively utilizing the 'Innovation Board' to support fundraising for government-trusted industries and future-oriented sectors, leveraging the 'Power Up Plan' to boost the market capitalization of Taiwan stocks and enhance the international competitiveness of its supply chains, and promoting the 'Pu-Yu Index' to guide capital toward high-value hidden champion stocks with strong cost-performance ratios.
Lin called on stakeholders, noting that Taiwan's capital market is experiencing a rare period of prosperity. The TWSE will continue to fulfill its policy mission by implementing transparency mechanisms such as the 'Taiwan Stock Dashboard', balancing risk management with information disclosure, and working hand-in-hand with all investors to cherish and protect the honor and stability of Taiwan's capital markets.
