U.S. President Trump traveled to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Wednesday evening (23rd) to personally welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, upon their arrival in Washington for a state visit. The reception was described by multiple media outlets as 'unprecedented' in its level of protocol.

The U.S. side arranged a 30-meter red carpet, performances of both nations' national anthems, a military honor guard inspection, and an aerial tribute featuring bombers and fighter jets. Subsequent events included a welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House and a state dinner inviting top executives from several major American tech companies, making the entire schedule highly ceremonial.

Since U.S. presidents typically receive foreign dignitaries at the White House, Trump’s decision to personally greet Xi at the airport was seen as a rare diplomatic courtesy.

White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that Trump’s gesture was intended as a reciprocal gesture for Xi’s hospitality in Beijing and emphasized the president’s willingness to build relationships with anyone to advance U.S. national interests. Ryan Haas, a scholar at the Brookings Institution, analyzed that the high-level reception signals a stable bilateral relationship and the ability to manage differences within a controlled framework.

Former Obama administration diplomat Danny Russel noted that the grand airport reception provided Beijing with a propaganda advantage, showcasing the Chinese leader as being held in exceptionally high regard by the U.S. president. BBC journalist Bernd Debusmann, reporting from the scene, said the U.S. reception arrangements were unlike anything he had previously witnessed.

Domestic reactions in the U.S. were divided over the high-level reception. Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the lavish welcome, arguing that such honors should not be granted given the ongoing disputes between the U.S. and China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, responded by emphasizing that as the world’s two largest economies and military powers, the U.S. and China must maintain the highest level of engagement.
