Survey on Usability and Disposal of Cosmetic Containers
Even when there is product left, it won't come out when the pump is pressed. Trying to refill it causes spills and sticky hands. Trying to crush the bottle for recycling is difficult. These small stresses related to cosmetic containers are likely something everyone has experienced. Even if consumers are satisfied with the product quality, the usability of the container often dictates overall satisfaction.
Therefore, in collaboration with Aska Company, we conducted a survey of 250 men and women across Japan who regularly use skincare or haircare products to understand their experiences with container usability and disposal.
24.4% Report Frustration with Cosmetic Containers We first asked if they had ever felt frustrated with their current cosmetic containers. 24.4% answered 'Yes,' while 75.6% answered 'No.' This indicates that for many, the container itself is a source of daily stress.
Top Complaint: 'Cannot Use Everything' (59.0%) Among those who felt frustrated, the most common complaint was 'cannot use everything' (59.0%), followed by 'difficult to refill' (42.6%) and 'difficult to dispense' (34.4%).
Frustration Scenarios: 'Cannot Get the Last Drop' (57.4%) When asked about specific scenarios, 57.4% cited 'cannot get the last drop' as the primary source of frustration, followed by 'hard to tell how much is left' (29.5%) and 'messy refills' (27.9%).
58.0% See Benefits in Pouch Containers When asked about spout-equipped pouches compared to bottles, 58.0% felt they offered advantages in terms of convenience and ease of disposal.
65.6% Would Use High-Quality Containers as the Primary Product Finally, 65.6% expressed interest in using high-quality containers with superior caps and spouts as the primary product, rather than just as a refill, to avoid the hassle of transferring contents.
Conclusion This survey reveals that 24.4% of users are dissatisfied with their cosmetic containers. The demand for better usability and easier disposal is clear, suggesting that functional packaging is a key factor in enhancing the daily skincare experience.
