Survey on Furniture Disposal and Procurement Following Office Relocation or Renewal
When an office relocates or undergoes renewal, the layout is often revamped, significantly changing the work environment.
While this can serve as a catalyst for a fresh start, it also presents the challenge of how to dispose of existing furniture such as desks, chairs, and cabinets, and how to procure new furnishings.
These processes of "disposal" and "procurement" are, in fact, crucial tasks that are often overlooked.
So, how are these tasks being handled on the ground?
To investigate this, we collaborated with Tomizawa Corporation to conduct a survey on "Furniture Disposal and Procurement during Office Relocation/Renewal" targeting 148 men and women nationwide who responded in a preliminary survey that they "have experience with office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) at their current or a past workplace."

※ In principle, figures are rounded to the second decimal place, so the total may not be 100%.
58.1% Responded That They "Continued to Use Existing Furniture and Equipment As Is" After Relocation/Renovation
First, we asked respondents who had experienced office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) how they handled existing furniture and equipment.
The most common response was "Continued to use as is at the new location/after renovation," at 58.1%.
This was followed by "Discarded/disposed of" at 42.6%, "Sold to a buyer/recycling company" at 16.2%, and "Stored some in a warehouse, etc." at 10.1%.
This indicates that over half of respondents continue to use their existing furniture.
Utilizing items that are still usable is a natural choice from both a cost and effort perspective.
However, "Discarded/disposed of" also accounted for over 40%.
It appears that many cases involve having to part with furniture due to layout changes or aging.
It can be inferred that decisions on whether to continue using or dispose of furniture are made on a case-by-case basis, considering the condition of each item.
34.5% Cited "Reluctance to Discard Still Usable Furniture" as a Disposal Concern
Next, we asked respondents who had experienced office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) about any burdens or difficulties they faced with the "disposal/processing" of existing furniture and equipment.
The most frequent response was "Reluctance to discard still usable furniture," at 34.5%.
This was followed by "Difficulty coordinating pickup/removal schedules" at 24.3%, and "High disposal costs" at 22.3%.
"Reluctance to discard still usable furniture" was cited as the biggest concern.
Even if furniture is functionally sound, it may have to be discarded due to rules or procedures, leading to a sense of "wastefulness."
Costs and effort were also significant burdens.
Large furniture items, in particular, often require specific procedures for disposal, and can sometimes incur more time and cost than anticipated.
These factors likely contribute to the burden of disposal tasks.
43.2% Purchased New Furniture in Bulk After Relocation/Renewal
Next, we asked respondents who had experienced office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) how they procured furniture and equipment afterward.
The most common method was "Purchased new items in bulk," at 43.2%.
This was followed by "Continued to use existing furniture" at 36.5%, and "Ordered directly from manufacturers/specialized vendors" at 16.9%.
"Utilized used/recycled furniture" accounted for 10.8%, and "Used rental/subscription services" was 2.7%.
The results show that while purchasing new items and reusing existing furniture are the main methods, there is also a notable adoption of options like recycled furniture and rentals.
This suggests a growing trend of selecting the optimal method from various perspectives, including cost, delivery time, and environmental considerations.
Furthermore, flexibly combining procurement methods according to the situation can lead to a more efficient and less wasteful office environment.
85.8% Found Services That Collectively Support "Disposal" and "Procurement" Convenient
We then asked respondents who had experienced office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) whether they would find a service that collectively supports both "furniture/equipment disposal" and "new furniture procurement" convenient.
The results showed that 39.2% found it "very convenient" and 46.6% found it "somewhat convenient," totaling 85.8% who responded that it would be convenient.
On the other hand, 11.5% "did not find it very convenient," and 2.7% "did not find it convenient at all."
We also asked for the reasons behind their opinions, and here are some excerpts:
Reasons for finding it convenient:
- "It gets everything done at once." (20s, Female) - "No need for troublesome procedures. Saves the effort of searching." (30s, Female) - "It leads to recycling." (40s, Male) - "Can request everything in one stop." (40s, Male) - "It's bothersome to handle each process separately." (40s, Female)
Reasons for not finding it convenient:
- "It seems expensive." (40s, Male) - "I don't think it's that much trouble to search separately." (50s, Female) - "It costs money." (50s, Male) - "The scale was small, so there weren't many items." (70s, Male)
85.8% of respondents found services that offer comprehensive support convenient.
Those who responded "convenient" cited reasons such as "can request everything in one stop," "gets everything done at once," and "no need for troublesome procedures," appreciating the ease of handling disposal and procurement simultaneously.
Some also mentioned environmental considerations, such as "leads to recycling."
Conversely, those who responded "not convenient" frequently cited cost-related concerns, such as "seems expensive" and "costs money."
While the convenience is acknowledged, there's also a clear emphasis on balancing it with cost.
These results indicate that services offering consolidated support are perceived as effective means for improving operational efficiency and reducing workload.
In the future, as cost-effectiveness becomes more convincing, their utilization is likely to expand.
33.1% Ideal Furniture Cost Savings is "Around 30-40%"
Finally, we asked respondents who had experienced office relocation or renewal (including renovations/layout changes) how much they ideally would like to save on "furniture costs" among the total expenses for office relocation/renewal.
The most common response was "Around 30-40%" at 33.1%, followed by "Around 10-20%" at 29.1%, and "Around 50% (half price)" at 24.3%.
Additionally, "Over 80%" was 10.1%, and "Around 60-70%" was 3.4%.
Here are some of the reasons provided:
Respondents who chose "Around 10-20%"
- "Our budget is usually exceeded, so we'd be happy to save even a little." (50s, Female) - "It's good to reduce the burden even slightly." (40s, Male) - "It's better to keep costs down, but since it's a company, we don't worry too much." (30s, Female)
Respondents who chose "Around 30-40%"
- "Everything is expensive." (20s, Female) - "We want to reduce costs." (30s, Male) - "It's best if it's cheap, but too cheap makes me uneasy, so I chose a rank slightly higher than half price." (50s, Female)
Respondents who chose "Around 50% (half price)"
- "It leads to cost reduction." (30s, Female) - "Good cost performance." (40s, Female) - "It would be quite expensive otherwise." (50s, Male)
The most frequent ideal savings rate was "30-40%."
Looking at the reasons, respondents who chose "30-40%" and "Around 50%" cited comments like "Furniture is expensive," "Leads to cost reduction," and "It would be quite expensive otherwise," indicating an awareness of the significant cost burden.
There were also comments like "too cheap makes me uneasy, so I chose a rank slightly higher than half price," suggesting a preference for balancing price with quality.
On the other hand, those who chose "10-20%" mentioned "It's good to reduce the burden even slightly" and "since it's a company, we don't worry too much," revealing differences in how people approach savings.
These results suggest that the desired level of savings varies depending on one's position and circumstances.
However, all responses indicate a desire to save money if possible.
Therefore, utilizing used/recycled furniture as a means to secure necessary quality while controlling costs is likely to gain further attention.
Summary
In this survey, the most common response for furniture after office relocation/renewal was "purchased new items in bulk" at 43.2%.
On the disposal side, "reluctance to discard still usable furniture" was the top concern.
Furthermore, 85.8% found services that collectively support "disposal" and "procurement" convenient.
Additionally, about 70% desired savings of "30% or more" on furniture costs, indicating a strong awareness of cost reduction.
These results highlight a strong need to efficiently arrange office environments while minimizing both effort and cost.
Services that support disposal and procurement in an integrated manner, as well as the utilization of used/recycled furniture, are likely to attract more attention as means to reduce burdens and establish necessary environments.
