One Machine for Washing and Drying. What Determined the Choice of a Drum-Type Washer, and What Are Users' True Feelings After Purchase?
A drum-type washing machine can handle both washing and drying in a single unit.
Today, it has become a familiar home appliance used in many households.
However, it's difficult to understand the reasons why people actually choose a drum-type washing machine and what they are satisfied with, based solely on catalog specifications. Also, after purchasing, there might be things you wish you had known beforehand, right?
Therefore, in collaboration with "Teiyu Co., Ltd.," a provider of house cleaning and air conditioner cleaning services, we conducted a survey on "Reasons for Purchasing and Satisfaction with Drum-Type Washing Machines" targeting 100 men and women nationwide who responded in a preliminary survey that they "use a drum-type washing machine."

48.0% Responded that the Trigger for Purchasing a Drum-Type Washing Machine Was "Existing Washing Machine Malfunction/Replacement"
First, we asked about the reasons for purchasing a drum-type washing machine.
The most common reason was "existing washing machine malfunction/replacement" at 48.0%.
This was followed by "family/partner's request" at 14.0%, and "moving/moving into a new home" at 12.0%. "Marriage/cohabitation" and "wanted to use the drying function" each accounted for 11.0%.
The top reasons were the lifespan of the previous washing machine and life events such as marriage and moving.
It appears that practical timing such as replacement or starting a new life is more of a push than actively desiring a drum-type washer.
43.0% Responded that the Reason for Choosing a Drum-Type Washer Over a Top-Loading One Was "Felt the Drying Function Was Superior"
Next, we asked why they chose a drum-type washer instead of a top-loading one.
The most common reason was "felt the drying function was superior" at 43.0%.
This was followed by "heard it had high water-saving performance" at 28.0%, and "heard it was gentler on clothes" at 13.0%. Furthermore, "thought the design was stylish," "it was popular/best-selling," and "was recommended by a home appliance store staff member" were closely ranked, each at 12.0%.
We asked for the reasons behind each deciding factor, and here are some examples:
Please select one of the reasons you chose and explain why.
* "I wanted to stop line-drying indoors, so I chose a washing machine specialized for drying." (20s, Female) * "I wanted something with convenient features." (20s, Male) * "After having a child, I wanted to lighten the burden of housework even a little." (30s, Female) * "I chose a large-capacity drum-type because the drying function on my top-loading washer was poor." (40s, Female) * "The drying function is convenient during the rainy season or pollen season." (40s, Female) * "As a dual-income couple, we wanted to shorten laundry time, so we chose a drum-type with a drying function." (50s, Male)
Looking at the responses, many of the deciding factors are related to the "drying function."
The background seems to be a desire to not be affected by weather or time, such as wanting to stop indoor drying, not wanting to be inconvenienced during the rainy or pollen seasons, or wanting to reduce laundry time for dual-income households.
Furthermore, the impact of daily busyness, such as raising children or working as a couple, on washing machine selection cannot be overlooked.
The drying function of drum-type washing machines appears to be expected to reduce the burden of daily housework.
91.0% Reported "Satisfied" with Their Current Drum-Type Washing Machine
Next, we asked how satisfied they were with their drum-type washing machine.
As a result, 27.0% responded "very satisfied" and 64.0% responded "somewhat satisfied."
In total, 91.0% reported satisfaction. On the other hand, only 8.0% reported "somewhat dissatisfied" and 1.0% reported "dissatisfied."
So, what do satisfied users find valuable?
We asked for the reasons for satisfaction, and here are some examples:
Reasons for Satisfaction
* "If you clean it, it dries in a short time." (20s, Female) * "Satisfied with the high functionality." (20s, Male) * "My clothes are always fluffy, and just not having to hang laundry is a huge help." (30s, Female) * "With the drying function, I can do laundry regardless of the time." (30s, Male) * "I don't have to worry about the weather, and the large capacity reduces effort." (40s, Female) * "I don't have to go to the coin laundry anymore." (50s, Male)
The presence of the drying function is prominent among the reasons for satisfaction.
Points such as eliminating the hassle of hanging laundry, being able to use it regardless of the weather, and doing laundry at any time of day contribute to satisfaction.
There were also comments about the quality of the results, such as clothes becoming fluffy.
Drum-type washing machines are evaluated not only for reducing housework but also for making daily laundry more comfortable.
Information for Continued Use, Such as Maintenance and Electricity Costs, Was What People Wanted to Know More About Before Purchasing
Finally, we asked what they felt they should have known more about before purchasing.
Please tell us what you feel you should have known more about before purchasing a drum-type washing machine.
* "How much the electricity costs would be." (20s, Male) * "Ease of cleaning." (30s, Female) * "The high price." (30s, Male) * "The smell after drying." (40s, Female) * "I wish I had known the difference between the heat pump method and other drying methods." (40s, Female) * "Towels become stiff." (50s, Female)
Looking at the responses, comments related to costs and maintenance that are relevant for long-term use, such as electricity costs, cleaning effort, and the main unit price, were prominent. Some people also mentioned specific points they noticed after actually using the machine, such as differences in drying methods, odors after drying, and the finish of towels.
While drum-type washing machines are highly satisfactory appliances, there are also ongoing costs and maintenance involved in their use. By confirming these points before purchase, it will be easier to make a more informed decision.
Summary
This survey revealed that drum-type washing machines are chosen at life milestones such as replacements or starting new lives, and are supported by expectations for their drying function. In fact, about 90% reported satisfaction, and many of the reasons are linked to "eliminating the hassle of hanging laundry."
On the other hand, it is also true that there are points that users only realize after purchase, such as electricity costs, maintenance, and differences in drying methods. In particular, the filters and internal parts that support the drying function are areas where dirt and dust tend to accumulate with continued use.
To maintain convenience for a long time, it is important to consider not only the specifications at the time of purchase but also daily maintenance and periodic internal cleaning.
