Survey on Children's Sports Activities and Uniforms
Uniforms and sportswear are essential for children's sports lessons and club teams.
A uniform with a name and number on the back can hold special meaning for a child.
On the other hand, many guardians may have been troubled by the not-inconsiderable cost.
It's also a concern whether the children themselves feel the effect commensurate with the cost.
Therefore, in collaboration with Sasakura Sports Co., Ltd., we conducted a survey on "Children's Sports Activities and Uniforms" targeting 284 guardians nationwide who responded "have children" in a preliminary survey.

Question 6: Did you feel that your child's motivation and confidence increased by wearing a uniform with their name and number?
Question 7: Please tell us specifically what changes occurred.
*In principle, the second decimal place is rounded off, so the total may not be 100%.
75.4% responded that they have "purchased uniforms or sportswear" for their children's sports activities.
First, we asked if their children had participated in sports lessons or club teams.
"Currently participating" was 8.8%, and "previously participated but not currently participating" was 37.0%.
Together, this indicates that 45.8% of households have children who have participated in some form of sports activity.
On the other hand, 54.2% have "never participated."
Furthermore, we asked those who had participation experience if they had purchased uniforms or sportswear.
As a result, 75.4% answered "yes" and 24.6% answered "no."
This shows that approximately 3 out of 4 children who have experience in sports activities purchased dedicated uniforms or sportswear.
32.7% responded that they "felt the cost of uniforms and sportswear was a bit expensive but purchased with satisfaction."
Next, we asked those who had purchased uniforms or sportswear how they felt about the cost.
The most common response was "felt it was a bit expensive but purchased with satisfaction" at 32.7%.
This was followed by "felt it was expensive and a burden" at 27.6%, "did not care much about the cost" at 18.4%, "felt the price was appropriate" at 16.3%, and "wanted more price options" at 5.1%.
The fact that the largest number of people purchased uniforms and sportswear with satisfaction, even though they felt the cost was a bit high, suggests that many guardians feel a value beyond mere clothing.
We asked for the reasons why they felt that way about the cost, and here are some excerpts.
Respondents who answered "felt it was a bit expensive but purchased with satisfaction"
- I thought it was expensive, but I bought it thinking it was an investment for my child. (40s, Female)
- My child feels more secure when they are with everyone else. (30s, Male)
- It's just how things are, like when I was a student. (40s, Male)
Respondents who answered "felt it was expensive and a burden"
- It's expensive for something they outgrow. (30s, Male)
- It was custom-made. (40s, Female)
- I don't have money. (50s, Male)
Respondents who answered "did not care much about the cost"
- Because it was necessary. (40s, Female)
- There were many other costs like enrollment fees and equipment to buy myself. (50s, Male)
- I thought it was for my child. (70s, Male)
While there are voices expressing financial burden, it is also evident that many guardians purchase uniforms with satisfaction as an expense to support their children's growth and positive attitude towards sports.
While consideration for cost is essential, it seems that many families feel the value of uniforms and sportswear as important support for their children to enjoy sports and participate as team members.
The top point emphasized when choosing was "being designated by the team or club" at 43.9%.
So, what points do guardians actually emphasize when choosing?
Next, we asked those who had purchased uniforms or sportswear about the points they emphasized when choosing.
The most common response was "being designated by the team or club" at 43.9%.
This was followed by "affordability" at 33.7%, "durability/material quality" at 32.7%, "ease of washing/care" at 28.6%, and "size adjustability/adaptability to growth" at 20.4%.
It appears that uniforms are often chosen as designated by the team or club, limiting the situations where guardians can freely choose designs or brands.
On the other hand, affordability, durability, and ease of care were also ranked high.
Since uniforms and sportswear are worn and washed daily, and replacements are expected due to growth, guardians seem to want to choose items that are easy to use for a long time while meeting the designated conditions.
67.4% responded that their child's "motivation and confidence increased" with the uniform.
Finally, we asked if guardians felt that their child's motivation and confidence increased by wearing a uniform with their name and number.
"Clearly felt it increased" was 38.8%, and "felt it slightly increased" was 28.6%, totaling 67.4% of guardians who felt a positive change due to the uniform. On the other hand, 32.7% felt "no particular change."
We asked about the specific changes that occurred and here are some excerpts.
Please tell us specifically what changes occurred.
- The feeling of carrying a number on my back. (30s, Male)
- It motivated me. (30s, Female)
- It fostered a sense of unity with teammates, making me try harder. (40s, Female)
- It leads to confidence and boosts motivation. (50s, Female)
- It cultivates team spirit. (50s, Male)
- Wearing a uniform with the school name and my own name increased my awareness of playing in official matches. (50s, Female)
Many responses indicated that wearing a uniform increased children's motivation, confidence, and sense of belonging to the team.
A uniform with a name and number on the back is not just for playing the sport, but also serves as a trigger to switch gears, thinking "I am a member of this team" or "I need to work hard for the match."
While the same changes may not be seen in all children, uniforms seem to play a role in fostering a positive attitude towards sports activities and connections with teammates.
Summary
This survey revealed that 32.7% of guardians felt "it was a bit expensive but purchased with satisfaction" regarding children's sports uniforms, and 67.4% felt that their child's motivation and confidence "increased" with uniforms bearing names and numbers.
Despite some feeling the cost is a burden, many guardians seem to recognize the value in fostering a sense of team membership and a desire to engage in sports.
Cost considerations and ease of use, along with the child's positive feelings.
By choosing a uniform that values both of these, it may be possible to make sports activities even more fulfilling.
