Matching items for anniversaries, what are people's true feelings now?

"Matching items" means wearing the same item as a loved one on anniversaries or special days.

What kind of feelings do people have about matching items these days?

Compared to rings and necklaces, "pair watches" are still not widely familiar.

It's also interesting to know how well they are actually known and how they are evaluated as gifts.

Therefore, in collaboration with HARADA, an authorized dealer of luxury watches, we conducted a survey on "pair watches and matching items" targeting 500 men and women nationwide.

87.8% responded that they have "no" experience with "matching" items with partners or family.

First, we asked if respondents had experience wearing "matching" items with their partners or family.

The results were 87.8% "no" and 12.2% "yes".

We are seeing more opportunities to come across terms like "matching outfits" and "shared purchases".

However, it seems that people who have actually worn matching items are still a minority.

The most common items worn so far are "rings" and "clothing/shoes" at 45.9%

Next, we asked those who answered "yes" to select all items they had worn.

The most common were "rings" and "clothing/shoes", both at 45.9%.

This was followed by "wristwatches" at 27.9% and "necklaces/pendants" at 18.0%.

While classic items like rings and matching outfits are popular, about 30% of people have experience wearing matching wristwatches.

Wristwatches are easy to wear daily and allow for subtle matching.

It can be seen that they are chosen as one of the options for matching items.

65.6% responded that they "do not know" the option of "pair watches".

Next, we asked if respondents knew about the option of "pair watches (matching wristwatches for partners or couples)".

The results were 65.6% "do not know" and 34.4% "know".

This means that about two-thirds of people did not know about the existence of pair watches.

While pair items like rings and necklaces are widely popular, pair watches seem to be a "hidden gem" for now.

On the other hand, precisely because awareness is low, there is room for future growth.

By understanding the appeal of pair watches, it's possible that more people will feel "I want to try them".

The most common image associated with owning a pair of wristwatches is "embarrassing/shy" at 30.6%

Next, we asked respondents to select the image that applies to owning a pair of watches.

The most common response was "embarrassing/shy" at 30.6%.

This was followed by "expensive" at 21.0%, "becomes a memento/memory" at 19.0%, and "can feel a bond/unity" at 14.8%.

While some people feel embarrassed or concerned about the price of pair watches, a significant number also have positive images such as "becomes a memento" and "can feel a bond".

We also asked for the reasons behind their chosen images, and here are some examples:

Respondents who answered "embarrassing/shy":

* It seems difficult to find designs that both people like. (20s, Female) * I don't like wearing the same thing. (20s, Male) * I'm conscious of what others think. (30s, Female)

Respondents who answered "expensive":

* They have an expensive image. (20s, Male) * It's a watch for special occasions. (30s, Male) * I simply think it costs double. (40s, Male)

Respondents who answered "becomes a memento/memory":

* Because it remains as an object. (20s, Male) * It feels unique. (30s, Female) * It seems easier to wear than rings. (30s, Female)

Respondents who answered "can feel a bond/unity":

* It has a special feeling of togetherness. (20s, Female) * I think it clearly conveys that "these two are a pair". (20s, Female) * Because I feel a bond. (30s, Male)

Among those who answered "embarrassing/shy", concerns about others' gazes were prominent.

On the other hand, those who answered "becomes a memento/memory" and "can feel a bond/unity" cited the appeal of uniqueness and the feeling of connection between the two people.

Also, from the image of "expensive", we can see concerns about the cost of purchasing two items.

People's perceptions of owning pair watches seem to vary greatly.

65.2% are positive about exchanging "lasting items" for anniversaries.

Next, we asked people what they thought about exchanging "lasting items" with their partners or family for anniversaries.

The results were 18.6% "think it's very good" and 46.6% "think it's somewhat good".

In total, 65.2% have a positive view of exchanging lasting items.

On the other hand, 12.6% "do not think it's very good" and 22.2% "do not think it's good at all".

For anniversary gifts, some people choose memorable experiences such as meals or trips.

Nevertheless, it is clear that over 60% are attracted to "lasting items" that can be looked back on later.

We also asked for the reasons why they thought it was good, and here are some examples:

Reasons for thinking it's good to exchange "lasting items" for anniversaries:

* It's a memento and it's something that lasts. (20s, Female) * I think it leads to good intimacy. (20s, Female) * It seems to strengthen the memory of the anniversary. (20s, Female) * Because it makes it easier to recall events and feelings later. (30s, Male) * I think the number of commemorative items reflects the history of the relationship. (30s, Female) * It deepens the bond. (30s, Male)

Many responses cited "because it lasts" and "it seems to strengthen the memory of the anniversary" as reasons for valuing objects.

People want to preserve special anniversary moments in a form that can be looked back on at any time.

This desire seems to lead to a positive evaluation of exchanging lasting items.

55.2% responded that "wristwatches" are "suitable" as anniversary gifts.

Finally, we asked if people thought "wristwatches" were suitable as items to exchange for anniversaries.

The results were 13.4% "think it's very suitable" and 41.8% "think it's somewhat suitable". In total, 55.2% responded that wristwatches are suitable as anniversary gifts.

On the other hand, 25.6% "do not think it's very suitable" and 19.2% "do not think it's suitable at all".

More than half of the respondents have a positive view of wristwatches as anniversary gifts.

Here are some of the reasons why they thought they were suitable:

Reasons why "wristwatches" are considered suitable as items to exchange for anniversaries:

* Because they are practical. (20s, Female) * It becomes a treasured item. (20s, Male) * I think it makes a good memento. (20s, Female) * Because they are worn daily. (30s, Male) * Because of their luxurious feel and the good meaning of "marking time". (30s, Female) * It's nice to feel the desire to "mark the same time together". (30s, Female)

Comments about the unique romance of wristwatches, such as "being able to mark the same time", were particularly noteworthy.

Also, many people appreciated the practicality, stating that they "become treasured items" and are "worn daily".

The fact that they can be used in daily life, rather than just being a gift that ends there, is also viewed favorably.

Perhaps because they are items that last a long time, many people feel they are suitable as anniversary gifts.

Summary

In this survey, only 12.2% of people had experience wearing matching items with their partners or family, and only 34.4% knew about pair watches.

On the other hand, 65.2% are positive about exchanging "lasting items" for anniversaries.

Furthermore, 55.2% of people feel that wristwatches are suitable as anniversary gifts, exceeding half.

The unique appeal of wristwatches, such as "marking the same time", can add a new option for anniversaries with loved ones. When considering gifts for special occasions, why not consider pair watches as one of the options?
