The 'cost' of saying a final farewell to a beloved family member, how much do we really know?
Pets live with us as family members.
We would rather not think about the day of farewell that will eventually come.
However, that day can arrive suddenly.
When you have to arrange cremation amidst grief, knowing the approximate cost can be helpful in making decisions.
So, how many people are aware of the typical costs for pet cremation?
Therefore, in collaboration with 'Japan Animal Memorial Co., Ltd.', a pet cremation and funeral service in Tokyo, we conducted a survey on 'Awareness of Pet Cremation Costs' targeting 250 men and women nationwide who responded that they 'own or have owned a pet' in a preliminary survey.

Only 7.2% know the 'specific cost' of pet cremation
First, we asked those who answered 'own or have owned a pet' how much they knew about the 'cost range' of pet cremation.
The results showed that 44.8% answered 'I don't know at all'.
Additionally, 25.2% answered 'I know it costs money, but I don't know the amount', and 22.8% answered 'I have a general idea of the amount'.
On the other hand, only 7.2% answered 'I know the specific cost range'.
Few people likely think about parting with their pets on a daily basis.
As a result, it is conceivable that there are few opportunities to research the costs.
Furthermore, because they are such important companions, many people may find it difficult to face this aspect.
42.0% responded that pet cremation costs are 'between 10,000 and less than 30,000 yen'
Next, we asked those who answered 'own or have owned a pet' what they thought the typical cost for pet cremation would be.
The results showed that 42.0% answered 'between 10,000 and less than 30,000 yen'.
Additionally, 26.0% answered 'between 30,000 and less than 50,000 yen', and 18.0% answered 'less than 10,000 yen'.
Overall, it appears that many people have a relatively low cost in mind.
However, the actual cost of pet cremation varies depending on the pet's size and cremation method (e.g., communal vs. individual cremation).
Costs also vary by cremation format and region, so not knowing the information in advance can lead to confusion on the day.
Understanding multiple options beforehand seems to lead to more satisfactory choices.
52.0% responded that their anxiety about pet cremation costs is 'not knowing the market price at all'
Next, we asked those who answered 'own or have owned a pet' if they had any concerns about the cost of pet cremation.
The most common response was 'not knowing the market price at all', with 52.0% exceeding half of the respondents.
This was followed by 'fear of being overcharged' at 28.0%, 'fear of additional charges on the day' at 25.2%, and 'lack of time to compare costs due to the suddenness of the event' at 22.4%.
We also asked about specific concerns, and here are some examples:
Please tell us your biggest concern and the reason for it.
- I don't know the market price, so I'm afraid I'll overpay. (20s, Female)
- Regarding costs and understanding of emotional care. (20s, Male)
- I don't know the market price, so I'm worried they might quote a high price out of the blue. (30s, Female)
- Even if the basic fee is low, if the additional charges are high, the total cost will end up being expensive. (30s, Male)
- Whether I am properly honoring them. (40s, Female)
- It's sudden, so I don't think I'll have time to gather information. (40s, Female)
With 'not knowing the market price at all' exceeding half at 52.0%, it is clear that the lack of a cost benchmark is a significant source of anxiety.
Additionally, 'fear of being overcharged', 'fear of additional charges on the day', and 'lack of time to compare costs due to the suddenness of the event' all received votes, indicating anxiety about having to make decisions under limited circumstances.
On the other hand, some responses to the biggest concern related to emotional aspects, such as 'whether I am properly honoring them', suggesting that consideration for the emotional side, not just the cost, is also needed.
It appears that for pet cremation, peace of mind is valued not only through clear pricing but also through clarity of services and handling.
64.0% responded 'cost-focused' for pet cremation
Finally, we asked those who answered 'own or have owned a pet' whether they would prioritize 'reducing costs' or 'service quality (polite service, farewell ceremony, etc.)' when requesting pet cremation.
The most common response was 'prioritize reducing costs' at 33.2%, followed closely by 'tend to prioritize costs' at 30.8%.
Combining these two, 64.0% indicated a tendency to prioritize cost.
On the other hand, 22.8% answered 'tend to prioritize service quality' and 13.2% answered 'prioritize service quality', totaling 36.0% who value quality.
We also asked for reasons for each perspective, and here are some examples:
Reasons for prioritizing 'reducing costs':
- I don't think it needs to be that expensive. (30s, Female)
- I want to reduce costs. (30s, Male)
- It still counts as proper memorialization. (40s, Male)
- While too cheap makes me worry about service quality, in this era of high prices, I want to keep expenses down as much as possible. (30s, Male)
- I want to send them off within my budget. (30s, Female)
- I want to keep the cost low but also expect a certain level of service. (40s, Male)
Reasons for prioritizing 'service quality (polite service, farewell ceremony, etc.)':
- I want to send them off properly. (20s, Female)
- The last time I used a service, it was cheap and bad, and the service was also poor. (30s, Male)
- It's a once-in-a-lifetime event, so I want to prioritize a method I can be satisfied with. (40s, Male)
- I want to send them off with peace of mind. (40s, Female)
- I want to honor them properly. (40s, Male)
- I don't want to spare any expense for my beloved dog. (50s, Male)
From those who prioritize cost, we hear voices like 'I want to reduce costs' and 'I want to send them off within my budget', as well as opinions that consider balance, such as 'I want a certain level of service'.
On the other hand, from those who prioritize service quality, we received comments like 'I want to send them off properly', 'I want to send them off in a way I can be satisfied with because it's a once-in-a-lifetime event', and 'I want to send them off with peace of mind'.
These results suggest that many people want to see their beloved pets off in a way they can be satisfied with, not just focusing on cost or service quality alone, but according to their individual circumstances and feelings.
Summary
From this survey, we found that only 7.2% of people know the 'specific cost' of pet cremation.
The most common anxiety regarding costs was 'not knowing the market price at all' (52.0%), indicating that the lack of clarity on market prices is a concern for many people.
While over 60% of people prioritize reducing costs for pet cremation, there were also voices prioritizing service quality, such as 'wanting to send them off properly' and 'wanting to prioritize a satisfactory method'.
Parting with a pet can happen unexpectedly.
Therefore, to be satisfied with the balance between cost and service quality when saying goodbye, it is important to compare multiple pet funeral homes and know the approximate costs and differences in cremation methods in advance.
Why not try to find a reliable pet funeral home so you can make calm decisions when the time comes?
