Survey on Environmentally Conscious Packaging and Brand Trust

How many people choose a product simply because its packaging says "eco-friendly"?

Reducing plastic and utilizing recycled materials are themes many manufacturers are now working on.

On the other hand, it's not always clear whether these efforts actually lead to trust and purchases.

Therefore, in collaboration with Asuka Company Inc., we conducted a survey targeting 500 men and women nationwide on "Environmentally Conscious Packaging and Brand Trust."

Survey Overview: "Environmentally Conscious Packaging and Brand Trust Survey"

Survey Method: Internet-based questionnaire

Survey Period: June 6, 2026 - June 9, 2026

Survey Target: Men and women nationwide

Valid Responses: 500 samples

Questions:

Question 1: When purchasing cosmetics or daily goods, have you ever chosen a product while being conscious of "environmental considerations (e.g., plastic reduction, use of recycled materials)" on the packaging?

Question 2: Please tell us the reason.

Question 3: What impression do you have of brands that adopt "spout pouches (refillable pouch containers with a spout)" which can significantly reduce plastic usage compared to conventional rigid bottle containers?

Question 4: If you learned that "plant-derived biomass plastic" was used for parts of the container (cap or spout), would your trust in or purchase intent for that brand change?

Question 5: When choosing products with advanced environmental initiatives, do you think it is important for them to balance "eco-friendliness" with "ease of use (functionality)"?

Question 6: Please tell us the reason why you think so.

*Note: In principle, values are rounded to the second decimal place, so the total may not be 100%.

34.2% Responded They Have "Chosen Products Conscious of Environmental Considerations"

First, we asked if respondents have ever chosen a product while being conscious of "environmental considerations" on the packaging when purchasing cosmetics or daily goods.

The results showed that 20.4% answered "many times" and 13.8% answered "once," totaling 34.2% who have experience choosing products with environmental considerations in mind. On the other hand, 65.8% answered "never."

While "never" was the majority, approximately one in three people consider environmental considerations when making purchasing decisions. Environmentally conscious packaging appears to be a trigger for choosing brands and products for a certain number of consumers.

Furthermore, we asked for the reasons why they have chosen such products, and here are some examples:

Reasons for Having Chosen Such Products:

* Because the environment is important. (20s, Female) * If it's the same, products that protect the environment are better. (20s, Female) * Refills are cheaper. (30s, Female) * I want to reduce waste. (40s, Male) * The brand's or manufacturer's consideration for the future and whether they spend too much on packaging are also part of the value of purchasing. (40s, Male)

Reasons such as "because the environment is important" and "because I want to reduce waste" were frequently mentioned.

Additionally, there were comments like "refills are cheaper," indicating that economic benefits, not just environmental considerations, also encourage product selection.

Some people also evaluate companies and brands through their environmental initiatives.

Environmentally conscious packaging seems to be perceived not just as a packaging innovation, but as an element that conveys a brand's values and reliability.

67.8% Have a "Favorable Impression" of Brands Adopting Spout Pouches

Next, we asked about the impression people have of brands that adopt "spout pouches (refillable pouch containers with a spout)," which can significantly reduce plastic usage compared to conventional rigid bottle containers.

The results showed that 22.2% had a "favorable impression," 17.0% had a "somewhat favorable impression," 15.0% thought they were "progressive brands in tune with the times," and 13.6% felt they were "environmentally conscious and highly likable brands."

Combining these, 67.8% have some form of positive impression.

On the other hand, 32.2% responded, "My impression doesn't change much."

This suggests that the choice of container is perceived not only in terms of functionality but also as an element that conveys a company's stance and values.

46.4% Responded That Trust/Purchase Intent "Increases" with Biomass Plastic Adoption

Next, we asked if trust in or purchase intent for a brand would change upon learning that "plant-derived biomass plastic" was used for parts of the container (cap or spout).

Biomass plastic is plastic made from renewable resources such as plants.

The results showed that 35.2% answered "somewhat increases" and 11.2% answered "both trust and purchase intent increase," totaling 46.4% who responded with a positive change. Meanwhile, 30.6% said "no change," and 23.0% said "somewhat no change."

Caps and spouts are parts that are usually not paid much attention to.

Nevertheless, the fact that a certain number of people change their evaluation upon learning about the material suggests that environmental considerations in less visible parts can also influence impressions.

79.2% Respond That Balancing Eco-friendliness and Ease of Use is "Important"

Finally, we asked if it is important to balance "eco-friendliness" with "ease of use (functionality)" when choosing products with advanced environmental initiatives.

The results showed that 40.2% thought it was "very important" and 39.0% thought it was "somewhat important," totaling 79.2% who consider the balance important. Only 11.0% said "not very important" and 9.8% said "not important at all."

Here are some of the reasons why they consider it important:

Reasons Why It is Considered Important:

* Because I want to choose based on ease of use. (20s, Male) * Otherwise, I can't continue using it. (20s, Female) * The buyer can purchase without guilt. Wonderful initiative. (20s, Male) * Even if it's environmentally friendly, if it's difficult to use, I don't think I can continue using it. (30s, Female) * If it's just eco-friendly but difficult to use, it's counterproductive. (30s, Female) * If it's not easy to use, I don't think it will lead to widespread adoption. (40s, Male)

Many comments emphasized "being able to continue using it."

It seems that even environmentally friendly products are unlikely to be used continuously if they are difficult to use.

Furthermore, comments like "won't lead to widespread adoption" and "counterproductive" suggest that being eco-friendly alone is insufficient, and ease of daily use is a prerequisite for continued selection. The balance between environmental consideration and functionality is a crucial perspective in creating products that are accepted by consumers.

Summary

In this survey, 34.2% of people had experience choosing products while being conscious of environmental considerations.

Furthermore, 67.8% had a favorable impression of brands adopting spout pouches, and 79.2% considered the balance between eco-friendliness and ease of use to be important.

Environmental considerations can enhance a brand's image.

However, to translate that evaluation into actual purchases, "ease of use" is also indispensable.

Choosing packaging that is both environmentally friendly and easy to use leads to choices that consider both our daily lives and the planet, doesn't it?
