Survey on "Interest in and Hurdles to Purchasing Custom-Made Suits"
Custom suits allow for tailoring to one's exact body measurements. They are frequently used in both professional and ceremonial settings. However, when considering custom tailoring, many people hesitate, often due to perceptions that it is "too expensive" or "intimidating." This survey, conducted in collaboration with Evers Suit, investigates how those who currently choose ready-to-wear options view custom tailoring.
Survey Overview: - Methodology: Internet-based questionnaire - Period: July 3 – July 9, 2026 - Target: 160 men and women across Japan who have purchased suits
68.1% of Respondents Choose "Ready-to-Wear Only" When asked about their suit purchasing habits, 68.1% of respondents selected "Ready-to-wear only." When combined with "Tend to choose ready-to-wear," the percentage rises to 88.7%, indicating a clear preference for ready-to-wear among consumers.
32.1% Express Interest in Custom Suits Among those who usually choose ready-to-wear, 32.1% expressed either "strong interest" or "some interest" in trying custom suits, while 33.9% showed little to no interest.
84.4% Cite "High Price" as a Reason for Not Trying When asked why they haven't tried custom suits, 84.4% cited "seems expensive" as the primary hurdle. Other reasons included "didn't think it was for me" and "finding measurements to be a hassle."
73.4% Associate Custom Suits with "Luxury" Regarding their general image of custom suits, 73.4% described them as "luxury items," while 44.0% identified the benefit of a "perfect body fit" and 25.7% cited the time and cost involved in the finished product.
59.6% Willing to Try if Price Difference is Minimal When asked if they would try custom tailoring if it cost about the same as ready-to-wear while providing a perfect fit, 59.6% of respondents indicated they would "like to try it."
