Survey Results: Web Browsing Behavior in the Smartphone Era

While many people use smartphones to search for information about businesses and shops, many users experience frustration with site readability and usability.

NEXER Group and GOSPA conducted a survey among 500 men and women nationwide on "Web browsing behavior and expectations in the smartphone era."

### Smartphones are the Primary Search Tool for 50.8% When asked which device is most frequently used to look up information, 50.8% cited "smartphone," followed by 43.0% for "PC" and 6.2% for "tablet." The ability to search on-the-go makes smartphones the core tool for information gathering.

### Functionality Trumps Design for "User-Friendliness" When asked about characteristics that make a site feel "easy to see or use," 53.5% cited "easy-to-read text size and color scheme," ranking first. This was followed by "layout that allows quick access to desired information" (39.8%) and "easy-to-press buttons and menus" (37.0%). Basic usability—the ability to read, find, and click—is valued higher than ornate design.

### 36.7% Have Experienced Inconvenience, Driving Abandonment When asked about experiences of inconvenience while browsing corporate sites on mobile, 36.7% of respondents reported experiencing it "sometimes" or "frequently."

Regarding actions taken when feeling inconvenienced, 51.6% reported that they "immediately left the site." Only 25.8% continued browsing with patience, while 15.1% "moved to a competitor's site," and 9.7% "stopped using the business entirely." Hard-to-use websites create a risk of losing users to competitors.

### Desired Features As for features users find convenient for business websites, "fee simulation functions" (15.7%), "online booking/application functions" (15.0%), and "easy-to-read map/access information" (12.2%) were the most popular.
