Nippon Ski Resort Development (NSD) is planning the '(Tentative Name) HAKUBA IWATAKE PROJECT', a luxury villa development for affluent domestic and international visitors at the base of Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort. Designed in collaboration with world-renowned architect Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA), the project aims for a partial opening in 2028 and a grand opening in 2030. The Hakuba Valley expects a record 900,000 foreign visitors in the 2025-26 winter season, and this project addresses the diversifying needs of these inbound tourists. The master plan focuses on harmonizing with the natural landscape and offering cultural experiences, including culinary elements, to create a world-class, sustainable mountain resort. In addition to the villas, the resort updated its gondola in December 2024, plans to renew the 5-line South Lift in December 2027, and expects to attract an international high-grade hotel to the base area by 2030.
