Featuring over 110 original illustrations, including those shown for the first time, this exhibition traces the stories that are loved around the world and resonate with your heart. The works of picture book author Satoe Tone, which convey a message of being "by your side," have captivated readers in Japan, Europe, and Asia. This exhibition introduces previously published picture books as well as unreleased original art from new titles. In addition to over 110 original illustrations, materials such as her favorite art supplies, sketches, and prototype books will be displayed to provide a glimpse into her creative process. Please enjoy the fantastical, gentle, and poignant world of her picture books that will make you pause as you turn the pages.
[Award-winning works return to our museum after more than a decade] In 2013, five works were exhibited at the Kawara Museum (at the time) as selected entries for the Bologna International Children's Book Fair. Based on these works, which won the International Illustration Award—a first for a Japanese artist—her debut work in Japan, "Pippo no Tabi" (NHK Publishing), was created. In 2026, we are pleased to exhibit the original art for all 16 pages of "Pippo no Tabi" once again, showcasing the trajectory of creation that transcends time.
[First exhibition of unreleased original art from three latest books] We will debut original art from "Haru ni Koishita Neko" (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha), published in February 2026, "Nezukun to Kusa-i Ku-chan" (Gakken), scheduled for July, and "Tsukiyo no Usagi" (NHK Publishing), scheduled for August. This is a rare opportunity to view original art from books released shortly before or during the exhibition period. Experience the unique charm of original art, such as vivid, delicate touches and depth that cannot be fully captured in print.
