Visualizing 'Home Dangers' and 'Living Solutions' for Families with Children with Developmental or Intellectual Disabilities

NPO Piat (Representative Director: Maiko Igarashi) has launched the 'Developmental Child Housing Project (Creating Safe and Secure Living Environments for Children with Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities)' to visualize challenges related to home environments and solve them through collaboration between families, caregivers, and housing environment professionals.

This project is supported by the 'FY2026 Housing and Community Building Activity Grant' from the Housing and Community Foundation.

### Necessity of the Project Challenges related to housing for children with developmental or intellectual disabilities are highly individualized due to varying characteristics, making them difficult to solve with general parenting information. Furthermore, consultation options are limited. While families have been implementing measures such as DIY projects and furniture rearrangements, this project aims to organize and accumulate this 'practical knowledge.'

### Actual Dangers and Issues Reported Recent interviews have reported cases such as: - Risk of falling from balcony railings in high-rise apartments - Fire incidents caused by putting objects into microwave ovens - Frequent clogging of toilets by excessive use of toilet paper - Using slides to climb onto TVs mounted in high places - Unauthorized eating of food or drinking of seasonings from the refrigerator

### Key Activities - Housing interviews with 20 households and 2 after-school day service centers - Organizing safety risks, difficulties, and adaptation examples - Holding information exchange meetings with architects and contractors - Hosting home adaptation workshops and facility tours (CALM exhibition corner) - Developing model displays for home safety measures

This project values the philosophy of 'adjusting the environment and waiting for growth.' Instead of aiming to change the child immediately, the project focuses on creating home environments where parents can monitor their children safely.
