Tokyo Disney Resort will host a special summer event, 'Summer Cool-Off at Tokyo Disney Resort (R),' from Thursday, July 2, to Monday, September 14, offering guests refreshing and joyful summer experiences filled with unforgettable moments.

In conjunction with this special event, Tokyo Disney Resort will implement heat countermeasures across the parks to ensure guests can enjoy their visit comfortably during the summer months.

In collaboration with the Center for Environmental Information Science (CEIS), a specialized organization in environmental conservation and environmental science, Tokyo Disney Resort has developed spatial design concepts and enjoyable heat-mitigation initiatives to adapt to changing summer weather conditions. These measures aim to support guests in creating unique summer memories, even during prolonged periods of high temperatures.

The key concept for summer spatial design: 'Upper, Middle, Lower'—an effective sequence!

Park environment measurement and spatial design for a more comfortable guest experience

Anticipating changing summer weather patterns, Tokyo Disney Resort has prioritized guest and cast comfort since the 2010s, continuously improving the park environment. In particular, in 2021, the resort partnered with CEIS to conduct a three-month evaluation of Tokyo Disneyland® and Tokyo DisneySea®, measuring environmental conditions such as WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) values. Based on the findings, the resort has advanced its spatial design by implementing heat-reduction measures in the effective sequence of 'upper, middle, lower,' tailored to the characteristics of each location.

Among these, 'upper' measures—blocking solar radiation—are particularly effective and have shown significant reductions in WBGT values.

Next in impact are 'middle' measures, such as improving air circulation.

Finally, 'lower' measures focus on suppressing surface temperature rise, including techniques like 'uchimizu' (water sprinkling) to utilize evaporative cooling.

'Upper' Measures (Blocking Solar Radiation)

'Upper' measures involve blocking direct sunlight with shading structures, significantly reducing radiant heat. Additionally, by creating shaded areas, the temperature rise of pavements and walls is suppressed, further reducing radiant heat. If shading materials are made of heat-resistant substances, radiant heat from the shading structures themselves can also be minimized.

'Middle' Measures (Improving Airflow)

'Middle' measures involve directing airflow directly onto the body to promote sweat evaporation and assist in body cooling. Additionally, fans help disperse trapped hot air and humidity.

'Lower' Measures (Reducing Surface Temperature)

'Lower' measures include installing water-retentive pavement and conducting 'uchimizu' (water sprinkling) to suppress surface temperature rise and reduce radiant heat.

The 'upper, middle, lower' measures are selectively applied based on the characteristics of each location to create comfortable environments. Across Tokyo Disney Resort, over 100 installations—including air conditioners, fans, and parasols—are in place to mitigate heat and enhance guest comfort.

※Center for Environmental Information Science (CEIS):

For over 20 years, CEIS has conducted research and consulting projects for national ministries, local governments, and private companies on thermal environments (e.g., heat island mitigation, heatstroke prevention). The center analyzes the health impacts of heat environments and has developed guidelines such as the Ministry of the Environment's Heat Island Countermeasure Guidelines and Urban Heat Countermeasure Guidelines, as well as manuals for municipalities and private sectors.

The most important thing: awareness of personal health and pacing oneself

An experience designed to raise awareness of health management through enjoyable cooling

Beyond environmental heat countermeasures, Tokyo Disney Resort is also implementing initiatives that encourage guests to manage their health comfortably throughout their park visit.

Special websites for pre-visit preparation and in-park cooling awareness, along with opportunities for interaction with Cast Members, are provided to help guests become more mindful of their health and enjoy a safe and comfortable experience.

New expert-developed heat countermeasure checklist

Starting this year, Tokyo Disney Resort has developed a new practical heat countermeasure tool under expert supervision, available for download on smartphones and other devices.

The tool aims to encourage guests to become more mindful of their personal health in a fun and engaging way.

Maintaining health is crucial, even while enjoying fun activities. To help guests, especially children who are more vulnerable to heat, stay cool, select locations offer mist fans and cool towels with cold water. Applying a cool mist while exposed to airflow is considered effective for skin temperature regulation—please give it a try.

Additionally, consuming cold items to lower core body temperature is an effective way to cool down. At select restaurants, menu boards and official website images feature a 'cold mark,' making it easy to identify chilled meals and beverages at a glance. Enjoy cooling from both the outside and inside during your park visit.

Indoor rest areas for relaxation

In addition to expanding outdoor rest spots, some restaurants open early to provide cool spaces before regular operating hours.

Moreover, to offer cool indoor rest areas, the Country Bear Theater at Tokyo Disneyland and the Mermaid Lagoon Theater at Tokyo DisneySea are open for guests to rest. Guests can also enjoy coloring activities and writing letters, creating lasting Tokyo Disney Resort memories while staying cool.
