Pixy Co., Ltd. (Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Teppei Ogura) conducted a survey on "pet cooling products" targeting dog and cat owners through its operated insurance comparison website, "Pet Insurance Comparison Pixy" (https://pi-xy.co.jp/).

As the peak of summer approaches, many pet owners may be considering heat-relief products for their pets. For this survey, we asked 200 dog and cat owners about the products they "found worthwhile" and those they "regretted purchasing," gathering honest feedback. We hope these insights help your beloved pets safely and comfortably endure the hot summer months.

【Survey Results】 Over 80% have purchased cooling products Top-rated product: Cooling bed/mats

Differences in preferences between dogs and cats become clear from rank #2 onward

Most regretted product: Also cooling bed/mats Failure rate for fans/circulators among cat owners is triple that of dog owners

Over 80% have purchased cooling products

When asked whether they had purchased pet cooling products for summer heat protection, 85.5% answered "yes." This indicates that most pet owners are actively purchasing some form of heat-relief product to prepare for summer.

Top-rated product: Cooling bed/mats

When asked about products they found worthwhile, "cooling beds/mats (47.0%)" received nearly half of all responses, securing a decisive first place. This shows they are a popular and highly satisfying item for everyday cooling.

In contrast, wearable walking accessories like "cooling vests/cooling necks (1.5%)" and "cool-material clothing (0.5%)" ranked low. These items may have limited use cases, reducing purchase interest.

▼ Examples of comments on "products found worthwhile"

"Even with the air conditioner on, my pet would get hot while sleeping, lose appetite, and avoid playing. Since introducing a cooling bed, my pet sleeps calmly, and I feel relieved." (Female, 30s, cat owner)

"My cat sleeps only on the cooling mat during summer, so I believe it enjoys it and that it helps prevent heatstroke." (Female, 30s, cat owner)

"Fans and circulators help circulate air throughout the room, making it feel cooler, and using them with the air conditioner helps save on electricity bills." (Female, 30s, dog and cat owner)

"The gel cooling mat was the best. The coolness lasts long, helping my dog rest immediately after walks. The washable cover also makes it hygienic." (Female, 20s, dog owner)

"Just having blackout curtains makes a big difference in blocking sunlight. The difference between having them and not is significant." (Male, 30s, dog and cat owner)

Differences in preferences between dogs and cats become clear from rank #2 onward

Comparing products found worthwhile between dog and cat owners revealed differences based on pet behavior.

For dogs, gel cooling mats ranked 2nd (13.0%), but for cats, they ranked 5th (1.8%) and were rarely chosen. In contrast, aluminum sheets/plates ranked 2nd for cats (19.6%), becoming the second most popular item after cooling beds/mats. This is likely because cats tend to seek out cool spots themselves, making simple, placeable aluminum sheets popular.

Most regretted product: Also cooling bed/mats!?

An unexpected result emerged when asking about regretted purchases. The "cooling bed/mats," which ranked first for satisfaction, also topped the regret list with 19.0%.

Despite being the most popular staple item, many reported their pets "didn't like it" or "chewed it to shreds," revealing it's a product with divided opinions. A similar trend was seen with other mat-type products like "gel cooling mats (14.5%)" at 3rd and "aluminum sheets/plates (11.5%)" at 4th.

▼ Examples of comments on "regretted purchases"

"I bought a cooling mat, but my dog showed no interest and never stepped on it." (Male, 40s, dog owner)

"My dog doesn't usually chew, so I didn't worry at purchase, but it chewed the gel cooling mat more than expected. I worried about accidental ingestion from holes and stopped using it immediately." (Female, 30s, dog owner)

"My dog didn't like having the cooling vest or neck on, and would always remove them, turning them into toys." (Female, 20s, dog owner)

"I bought a small, portable fan to help my pets cool down, but I realized it wasn't ideal for animals, and they disliked the airflow, so I ended up hardly using it." (Female, 50s, dog and cat owner)

"I planted bitter gourd seedlings as a cooling item, but insects gathered, and my dog disliked them. It was a failure." (Female, 20s, dog owner)

Cat owners' failure rate is triple that of dog owners? Fans/circulators

Comparing regretted purchases between dog and cat owners, dog owners mainly regretted wearable heat-relief items. Combined, "cooling vests/cooling necks (9.8%)" and "cool-material clothing (8.9%)" meant about 18.7% of dog owners felt regret.

In contrast, cat owners showed higher rates for "fans/circulators (12.5%)" and "aluminum sheets/plates (16.1%)". Notably, fans/circulators had a 12.5% failure rate for cats, about triple the 4.1% for dogs. Cats tend to be wary of machine noise and airflow, so many didn't use them as expected, leading to purchase regret.

This survey revealed that "cooling beds/mats" ranked first in both "worthwhile" and "regretted" categories among summer pet cooling products. Preferences also differed by pet type—gel cooling mats were popular among dog owners, while aluminum sheets were favored by cat owners.

When choosing cooling products, it's key to consider not just popularity, but whether the item suits your pet's personality and preferences, ensuring a comfortable summer.
