The Museum of Sakitama Ancient Burial Mounds in Saitama has been conducting excavations at the Atagoyama Tumulus. A newly restored artifact excavated in FY2024 has been identified as a leather-bag-shaped Sue ware, the first of its kind found in the prefecture. Sue ware is Japanese pottery using technology brought from the Korean Peninsula. While these bag-shaped items with clay representations of seams and ties are usually found in western Japan, this is the first confirmed discovery in the Kanto region. The artifact, estimated to be 30cm high and 23cm wide, was found in the inner moat on the eastern side of the 55-meter-long keyhole-shaped tumulus. It will be publicly exhibited at the museum's special exhibition from July 11 to August 30, 2026.
