Tokyo International School Group (TISG), a subsidiary of EdTech company RareJob Inc. (RareJob), which develops and provides a theme-based inquiry curriculum taught in English for kindergartens and after-school programs, has launched "Tap & Talk Reading," a new reading-focused learning material within its "Tap & Talk" series for children aged 3 to 12.
About the Tap & Talk Series
Since its founding in 1985, TISG has operated numerous international preschools and after-school programs in Japan for over 40 years. The Tap & Talk series is an English learning material developed in-house by TISG for children aged 3 to 12. In 2022, they launched "Tap & Talk Phonics," a beginner-level text specializing in phonics (*1) learning. This material, which deepens understanding of letters while learning the relationship between English sounds and letters, is used by many children to develop their reading skills.
*1 The rules governing the relationship between English letters and sounds. Each of the 26 alphabet letters has a reading and different ways of pronunciation, and by combining these, words are read. This is a common learning method used by children in English-speaking countries.
Overview of "Tap & Talk Reading"
One of the most effective methods for English reading and writing is reading aloud and extensive reading through stories. "Tap & Talk Reading" is a comprehensive English learning material for beginners, centered around 48 stories aligned with the Lexile framework (*2), allowing learners to gradually study reading comprehension, phonics, grammar, and more. TISG uses this material for both classroom instruction and home study in its "LTE Course," which meets once a week. It is also available for general sale, structured so that children not attending the course can use it as a self-study material.
This material consists of four English levels (100-200 Lexile) and three types of texts. Centered around the experience of reading stories, it aims to build foundational skills, including reading and writing equivalent to Eiken Grade 3, by comprehensively acquiring the basics of English while developing vocabulary and reading comprehension.
*2 A metric that indicates English "reading comprehension ability" and "text difficulty."
1 Readers
Learners acquire basic vocabulary while enjoying interactive stories. This material aims to steadily and naturally develop the reading comprehension and vocabulary skills necessary for long-term learning.
2 Workbooks
Learners study phonics, handwriting practice, reading comprehension, grammar, and more, using words and sentences from the stories. The goal is to achieve solid retention through "learning by doing" with a pencil.
3 Extension Books
Supplementary texts to enhance further learning. Learners revisit the same skills learned in the workbooks through additional practice problems.
