What is a Designated Wholesale Electricity Supplier (Aggregator)?
A designated wholesale electricity supplier (aggregator) refers to a business entity that aggregates, manages, and controls distributed energy resources—such as solar power plants and battery storage systems—scattered across various locations, enabling their efficient collective utilization. By operating multiple resources as a single integrated unit, aggregators contribute to the effective use of renewable energy (hereinafter "renewables") and help balance electricity supply and demand.
Background of Certification Acquisition
As renewables become a mainstay power source, the environment surrounding distributed energy resources is undergoing significant changes, including the transition from the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) system to the market-linked Feed-in Premium (FIP) system and the expanded use of grid-scale battery storage. Consequently, asset-owning businesses are now required to perform more sophisticated demand-supply management, such as forecasting electricity market prices and responding to imbalances.
To date, the Company has leveraged its expertise in demand-supply management and AI-based forecasting technologies developed as a retail electricity provider to promote efficient energy utilization through the operation of its own resources. Looking ahead, the Company believes it is essential to expand these initiatives beyond its own assets to include resources owned by third parties.
In light of this context, the Company submitted its notification as a designated wholesale electricity supplier. Building on this notification’s acceptance, the Company will advance aggregation initiatives targeting third-party-owned solar power plants, battery storage systems, and other distributed energy resources.
Future Initiatives
Moving forward, the Company will advance efforts to provide aggregation services to power generators, end-users, and other businesses that own—or are considering owning—distributed energy resources.
Specifically, the Company plans to offer support leveraging its accumulated demand-supply management expertise and forecasting technologies, focusing on post-transition operational support for power generators with FIT solar plants under the FIP system, as well as operational support for grid-scale battery storage systems.
Through integrated management and control—orchestration—of multiple energy resources, the Company will maximize the value of distributed energy resources and contribute to the effective utilization of renewables and the stabilization of electricity supply.
