NPO MORE Kikaku will conduct an underwater cleanup at Toida Port, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, on October 26, 2026, as part of the 'Izu Peninsula Marine Debris Cleanup Project' (commonly known as 'Izu Pro'). This event will be co-hosted as part of the 'Association for Connecting Shizuoka’s Beautiful and Rich Seas to the Future' (Tsunagukai)’s underwater cleanup support program.
Last year, MORE Kikaku collected approximately 2 tons of marine debris during a separate cleanup operation at the same port. However, significant amounts of waste remain underwater, prompting the decision to continue activities at this location. To date, the overall 'Izu Peninsula Marine Debris Cleanup Project (Izu Pro)' has collected over 10 tons of marine debris across various sites on the Izu Peninsula.

What is 'Izu Pro'?
The 'Izu Peninsula Marine Debris Cleanup Project (Izu Pro)' is a 10-year initiative addressing marine debris accumulating in ports, fishing harbors, and marinas along the Izu Peninsula coast. Rather than one-off cleanup events, the project aims to create sustainable systems that enable ongoing participation from local communities, businesses, government, educational institutions, and divers. Preventing ocean conservation from becoming the sole responsibility of a few experts is a core principle of MORE Kikaku.
Why clean the same location again?
Marine debris cannot be resolved through a single cleanup. Even at Toida Port, where approximately 2 tons were collected last year, large amounts of waste remain underwater. Submerged debris is difficult to see from land and often goes unnoticed. Yet, waste continues to accumulate in these hidden areas. Therefore, MORE Kikaku emphasizes continuous, rather than one-time, cleanup efforts.

Last Year’s Activity Results
The underwater cleanup at Toida Port last year collected approximately 2 tons of marine debris. Recovered items included fishing gear, metal objects, empty cans, and household waste. Participants included not only divers but also local residents, affiliated organizations, and students.
Media coverage was conducted last year. The Shunto Izu Tagata Fire Department’s water rescue team also participated in the cleanup.

Collaboration with MaOI’s 'Tsunagukai'
The Marine Open Innovation Institute (MaOI), a general foundation corporation, serves as the core implementing body for Shizuoka Prefecture’s Marine Open Innovation Project, promoting the 'Blue Economy' that balances marine industry development with marine environmental conservation.
'Tsunagukai' (The Association for Connecting Shizuoka’s Beautiful and Rich Seas to the Future), headquartered at MaOI, promotes collaboration among organizations and businesses active in Shizuoka’s marine environment and supports activities focused on marine conservation.
MORE Kikaku and Tsunagukai have continuously shared information on marine environmental issues through events and Instagram live streams. This year, by co-hosting Tsunagukai’s underwater cleanup support program, they aim to further strengthen regional collaboration and marine conservation efforts.

Looking Ahead
MORE Kikaku continues its 10-year initiative to address marine debris in ports, fishing harbors, and marinas along the Izu Peninsula coast. Beyond simple cleanup activities, the goal is to build systems that enable sustained engagement from local communities, businesses, government, educational institutions, and citizens. As more people become aware of the on-site realities, our relationship with the ocean will gradually change.
Marine debris cannot be solved by a select few alone. However, as more people understand the situation on the ground, the future of our communities will gradually transform. MORE Kikaku will continue its mission of connecting the sea to the future, together with local communities.
