The "Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki" series of learning workbooks, a staple for children's education, has surpassed a cumulative total of 10 million copies sold. The Kageyama Method, which enhances fundamental abilities in "reading, writing, and arithmetic" – crucial for improving children's academic skills – through intensive repetitive learning, has garnered overwhelming support for its ability to rapidly boost academic performance!

Two new books have now joined the ranks of its flagship series, "Hyaku Masu Keisan"!

1. "Pre-Hyaku Masu Keisan: Multiplication & Division" Aims for Complete Mastery of Multiplication and Division

As the title suggests, "Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki, Pre-Hyaku Masu Keisan: Multiplication & Division" is a drill designed to ensure a solid grasp of multiplication and division before tackling "Hyaku Masu Keisan: New Edition."

The most significant feature of this drill is its design to strengthen skills in division with remainders, particularly problems where calculating the remainder involves "subtraction with borrowing," such as 31 ÷ 4 or 55 ÷ 7.

"Hyaku Masu Keisan: New Edition" includes "Hyaku Waru," a challenging worksheet with 100 problems involving division with remainders, in addition to the addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems of "Hyaku Masu Keisan."

The "New Edition" (released March 2026) of the hit drill "Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki, Hyaku Masu Keisan," with over 3.2 million copies sold.

"Hyaku Masu Keisan" multiplication worksheet. The goal for "Hyaku Masu Keisan" is to complete each problem in under 2 minutes, repeating the same problems for 14 days.

"Division with Remainders: Hyaku Waru" worksheet. The target for "Hyaku Waru" is under 5 minutes, but it is quite difficult to achieve this goal without prior practice.

Dr. Hideo Kageyama states, "If you can do 'Hyaku Masu Keisan' in under 2 minutes, you won't struggle with any calculations learned in elementary school. However, 'Hyaku Waru' is completely different from 'Hyaku Masu Keisan.' The calculation method itself is on another level."

This is because, "With 'Hyaku Waru,' you must simultaneously perform two calculations: finding the quotient in division and performing 'subtraction with borrowing' to find the remainder."

"'Hyaku Masu Keisan' is a learning material that speeds up simple, single-task calculations, whereas 'Hyaku Waru' is a learning material that speeds up dual-system, multitasking calculations," he explains.

"Developing multitasking calculation abilities will strengthen your preparation for junior high school entrance exams. It will enable you to solve simultaneous equations. You will acquire the skills necessary to extend your calculation abilities to differential and integral calculus. These are essential skills for advancing to university in science and engineering fields," says Dr. Kageyama.

In "Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki, Pre-Hyaku Masu Keisan: Multiplication & Division," after practicing multiplication thoroughly with "Jyu Masu Multiplication," you will tackle division problems that divide evenly with "Anaaki Multiplication" and "Jyu Masu Division." Then, you will gradually increase the level with "division with remainders" (both "without borrowing" and "with borrowing"), aiming for complete mastery of division with remainders through "Goju Waru" and "Nanaju Go Waru."

The target for "Jyu Masu Multiplication" is 12 seconds. The same problems are repeated for 3 days for the multiplication tables of 1, 2, and 5, and for 4 days for other tables.

"Division with Remainders" includes worksheets for both "without borrowing" and "with borrowing," with a target of under 2 minutes per sheet for both.

The target for "Goju Waru" is 2 minutes 30 seconds, repeating the same problems for 3 days. The target for "Nanaju Go Waru" is 4 minutes, repeating the same problems for 2 days.

This drill includes one "Hyaku Waru" worksheet as a challenge at the end. It's okay if you don't achieve the target of 5 minutes here. By thoroughly mastering the fundamentals of multiplication and division with this drill, aim for 5 minutes on "Hyaku Waru" when you move on to "Hyaku Masu Keisan: New Edition!"

2. "1st Grade Kanji Handwriting Drill" Teaches the "Rules" for Writing Neat Kanji

"Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki, 1st Grade Kanji Handwriting Drill" uses the 80 kanji characters learned in the first grade of elementary school to teach the "rules of kanji" for writing neat characters, while also developing the ability to freely move the pencil with the fingertips and write beautiful characters.

"Handwriting practice enhances intelligence through finger learning. Basic academic skills improve with handwriting practice!" says Dr. Kageyama.

"1st Grade Kanji Handwriting Drill" consists of 7 steps, learning one "kanji rule" at a time.

Step 1: Align the center of the character! → Practice writing characters like "山" (yama) and "小" (shou) so that the long vertical strokes are centered within the grid.

Step 2: Round the long horizontal strokes! → Practice making long horizontal strokes like those in "十" (juu) and "上" (jou) appear long and flowing by giving them a slight curve.

Step 3: Make the spaces between strokes equal in size! → Practice making the spaces between the vertical strokes of "山" (yama) or the horizontal strokes of "王" (ou) equal in size.

At the beginning of each step, by comparing neat and messy characters, children can discover the key points for writing beautiful characters themselves.

On the first day, practice 4 kanji characters in 24mm grids. An example is provided to the left of each grid. The first practice grid shows the "kanji rule" for that step with dotted lines indicating points to pay attention to when writing.

On the second day, practice the same 4 characters in 20mm and 18mm grids, training the fingers to move more dexterously by writing smaller characters.

Step 4: Make only one stroke long among several! → For characters like "王" (ou), make only the bottom horizontal stroke long and keep the other two the same length. For the two vertical strokes in "林" (hayashi), make the right vertical stroke longer.

Step 5: Change the direction of vertical strokes in square shapes! → For horizontally elongated or square grids like "田" (ta), write the vertical strokes diagonally. For vertically elongated grids like "目" (me), write the vertical strokes straight.

Step 6: Find the center of difficult kanji! → Practice characters like "空" (sora), where dots and vertical strokes are centered, or "文" (bun), where the intersection of dots and strokes is centered.

In the final Step 7, using all the "kanji rules" learned in Steps 1-6, practice 16 kanji characters for the second grade.

Aren't these "kanji rules" points that even adults don't consciously consider, but make you think, "Ah, I see!"?

Dr. Kageyama says, "Handwriting practice is brain training!" In that sense, this handwriting drill is perfect for enjoyable learning for both parents and children.

Additionally, there is another handwriting drill, and we recommend starting with "Hiragana and Katakana Handwriting Drill," which begins practice with fun drawing exercises.

"Kageyama Method: Tettei Hanteki, Hiragana and Katakana Handwriting Drill" also has a structure where the same characters are practiced for two days.

"Hiragana and Katakana Handwriting Drill" includes 11 pages of fun practice exercises drawing the lines and patterns of animal bodies before practicing characters. "1st Grade Kanji Handwriting Drill" also includes 4 drawing practice pages.
