Sumiyoshi Shrine, Ichinomiya of Nagato Province

The main shrine building, designated a National Treasure, was built by Hiroyo Ouchi in 1370 (Koan 3). It uses a "nagare-zukuri" style connecting five shrine buildings, a unique and valuable architectural style. You can have a special close-up viewing of the main shrine building from within the normally inaccessible sacred grounds, accompanied by an explanation from a Shinto priest.

Kozan-ji Temple

The National Treasure Buddha Hall is extremely valuable as a typical example of a Zen Buddhist hall with a clear construction date, characterized by its elegant exterior with a skirt-like roof called a "mikoshi."

It is also the site of the "Kozan-ji Uprising" where Takasugi Shinsaku raised an army with only about 80 like-minded individuals in the late Edo period, and a statue of a mounted warrior remains in the precincts.
