Space Data Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kohei Sato; hereinafter referred to as "Space Data") announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Inovor Technologies (Headquarters: Adelaide, South Australia; CEO: Matthew Tetlow; hereinafter referred to as "Inovor"), a leading Australian manufacturer of satellite buses and subsystems, regarding business development and cooperation in the fields of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA).

The MOU signing ceremony was held in Tokyo on July 7, 2026, starting at 3:00 PM.

Background

The increasing number of satellites and space debris worldwide has heightened the global importance of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA) to ensure the safe use of outer space. In particular, "space-based SSA/SDA," which involves observing other space objects from satellites placed in orbit, is seeing accelerated development in various countries as a method less constrained by factors such as weather and ground-based observation locations.

Since its establishment in 2012, Inovor has been involved in the design, manufacturing, testing, and operation of small satellites, providing end-to-end satellite mission solutions in Australia and surrounding regions. In 2027, the company plans to launch the "Hyperion" space-based SSA/SDA satellite constellation. This satellite is characterized by its ability to observe objects in geostationary orbit (GEO) at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km while being deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO).

There is a growing momentum in both government and private sectors between Japan and Australia to strengthen cooperation in the fields of security and space. Space Data has also been accelerating its initiatives in the SSA/SDA domain, including its business partnership with France's Look Up Space in April 2026 and the announcement of its space AI platform "SpaceBrain" in June 2026. This MOU aims to materialize cooperation in the SSA/SDA field, building on this trend of Japan-Australia collaboration and the strengths of both companies.

Key Contents of the MOU

Development and enhancement of presence in the SSA/SDA business in both Japanese and Australian markets.

Consideration of new services and solutions utilizing Inovor's space-based SSA/SDA satellite data.

Establishment of a foundation for future joint projects and proposals, including SSA/SDA-related projects.

Deepening of cooperation between the two companies, in line with the strengthening of Japan-Australia collaboration in security and space.

Future Outlook

With the expansion of space utilization, addressing the risks of collisions between satellites and space debris, as well as security threats, has become a common challenge for the international community. Through this MOU, Space Data aims to deepen cooperation in the SSA/SDA fields between Japan and Australia, contributing to the realization of "space resilience" that supports the stable and sustainable use of outer space. The company will continue to expand cooperation with domestic and international partners, aiming to realize a society where everyone can utilize space.
