Participation in Domestic ECLSS Development for Manned Space Transport Safety

Space Systems Development Co., Ltd. (lead organization) has been selected for JAXA's publicly solicited "Space Strategy Fund Project / Foundational Technologies for Ensuring Safety in Manned Space Transport Systems." Space NS Plan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director: Naoshi Suzuki) will participate in this project as a collaborating organization. After the end of ISS operations, low Earth orbit is expected to transition to a privately-led space economy. However, core technologies such as ECLSS, which protect the lives of astronauts, continue to be dependent on foreign sources, making technological independence a challenge.

Development Content This project will develop the following: Oxygen/Nitrogen management technology CO₂ and trace harmful gas removal technology Integrated analysis and simulation technology utilizing digital twins Microgravity-compatible space toilet system

In the future, the company aims to install these systems in domestic manned space transport systems and supply components to overseas commercial space stations.

Role of Space NS Plan Our company will be responsible for the development of the space toilet system. We will also leverage the expertise of engineers with experience in "Kibo" and "Kounotori" development, as well as engineers with spacecraft development experience, to support the entire project from both technical and management perspectives.

Comment from Space NS Plan Representative Director Although our company operates as a consultant, we also provide support throughout the development planning and implementation phases. We interpret the adoption of our proposal by the JAXA Space Strategy Fund as an evaluation of our planning capabilities. Furthermore, our space toilet system was highly evaluated as the only domestic proposal, offering an advanced design with a focus on cleanliness. Moving forward, we will continue development to provide space toilet systems not only for manned cabins but also for domestic and international space applications.
