With the strong Typhoon Bavi gradually approaching, the Central Weather Bureau forecasts that Kaohsiung may experience localized heavy rainfall due to the outer circulation. In response, the Kaohsiung City Government has proactively initiated flood prevention preparations. On the 9th, Deputy Mayor Lin Chin-jung visited the Yuehworld Pumping Station in Tianliao District and the surrounding area of Jiafeng Road in Gangshan District to inspect the readiness of mobile pumping units, drainage facilities, and backup power systems. He urged all departments to strictly implement flood prevention measures, ensuring that drainage equipment operates normally during heavy rains to reduce the risk of flooding.
The Water Resources Bureau reported that during the heavy rains in late June, flooding occurred in the Yuelu Road area of Tianliao. The city government has coordinated with the 6th River Management Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Water Resources Agency to complete dredging and levee reinforcement works on the Erren River. Drainage channels around Meilao Bridge have also been cleared, and sandbags have been used to seal flood defense gaps, enhancing flood protection capabilities in low-lying areas.
Mobile pumps deployed in Yuehworld, backup power ready in Gangshan – strengthening heavy rain response capacity
To prepare for potential heavy rainfall from Typhoon Bavi, the Water Resources Bureau has requested three mobile pumping units from the 6th River Management Office and completed their pre-deployment. These units can be immediately activated based on rainfall and water level changes, improving flood response efficiency in the Yuehworld area.
Deputy Mayor Lin also expressed gratitude to the Kaohsiung Reserve Command for assisting in post-disaster recovery during the previous heavy rains, swiftly deploying military personnel to help Tianliao residents clean their homes. In preparation for the approaching typhoon, the military has completed its readiness and will cooperate with the city government in disaster prevention, evacuation, and rescue operations.
Subsequently, Deputy Mayor Lin proceeded to the area around Jiafeng Road in Gangshan District to inspect backup power equipment at pumping stations. The Water Resources Bureau noted that, considering possible power outages during typhoons, large-scale generators have been pre-positioned to support multiple pumping stations located east and west under National Highway No. 1 and around Tan-di Road. In the event of a power interruption from Taipower, backup power can be immediately activated to maintain continuous pump operation, ensuring uninterrupted drainage functions.
Lin emphasized that disaster prevention relies on proactive deployment. The city government will continue to closely monitor typhoon movements, rainfall, and water conditions, dynamically adjusting pumping equipment and flood prevention resources as needed to fully prepare for all disaster scenarios and safeguard citizens' lives and property.
