Syi Guangyang, son of KMT legislator Wan Meiling and candidate for the Taoyuan City Council, has recently been embroiled in controversies involving bullying classmates, physically assaulting students with special needs, and involvement in sports betting scandals. Although Syi has publicly admitted to some of the allegations, Wan Meiling swiftly mobilized supporters and pro-KMT neighborhood leaders to post supportive comments online.
On the 9th, Wan Meiling made her first public statement during a radio interview. She emphasized that she has gathered evidence and will take legal action against false defamation. She insisted that Syi Guangyang would never harm others and stated that whether he continues his campaign would be his personal decision.
In response, DPP Legislative Caucus Deputy Secretary-General Chuang Jui-hsiung sharply criticized Wan, saying she appears determined, believing her son naturally deserves to win and is the best candidate—"What do other candidates even matter?"
Chuang held a press conference today to address public sentiment. Regarding Wan's threat of legal action, Chuang stated that while he understands a mother's struggle and her desire to use the judicial system, the DPP respects how political figures manage risks. However, whether this crisis management approach will contain the damage and end the controversy depends on future developments and public acceptance.
On the question of whether Syi should withdraw, Wan said Syi is now an independent adult and that she respects his handling of the matter. His future path, she added, will be decided together with his supporters.
Chuang pointed out that this issue is an internal storm within the KMT. Since city council elections allow multiple winners per district, the DPP will fight hard regardless of who the KMT nominates. The greater impact, he said, will be vote-splitting within the KMT.
Chuang stated bluntly that Wan, as a legislator with strong local influence, has been grooming her son to succeed her in politics. Judging from her response, she has made up her mind. Asking Syi to withdraw may be difficult. She appears indifferent to public criticism, but ultimately, every vote will be judged by Taoyuan citizens.
Chuang emphasized that the party suffering consequences will not be the DPP. While the DPP respects the KMT's strategy and the Wan family's decisions, the votes do not belong to the Wan family.
