Kin Moy, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), recently proposed that cross-strait dialogue should proceed 'without preconditions' and that the 'status quo' should serve as the foundation for such dialogue. He later added that 'nothing would be more effective in deterring conflict than turning Taiwan into a 'hive' filled with aerial, surface, and underwater drones.' On July 9, Chen Bin-hua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), responded by accusing Moy of 'handing knives to Taiwan independence' and behaving like a 'shadow emperor,' claiming his remarks contradict President Trump's serious stance against anyone 'pursuing independence.'

On July 8, the Taiwan Affairs Office held its regular press briefing. A Chinese media outlet asked: 'Kin Moy, Director of the AIT Taipei Office, recently stated that nothing would be more effective in deterring conflict than turning Taiwan into a 'hive' of drones operating in the air, on the surface, and underwater. What is your comment on this?'

TAO: Kin Moy Acts Like a 'Shadow Emperor'

Chen Bin-hua stated: 'The Taiwan issue is the most important topic in China-U.S. relations and was one of the key issues discussed during the China-U.S. summit in May. President Trump publicly stated after the meeting that he does not want to see anyone pursuing 'independence,' does not want U.S. troops to travel 9,500 miles to fight, will not be a backer of 'Taiwan independence,' and will not easily commit to arms sales to Taiwan. China takes seriously the U.S. government's political statements and actions.'

'For some time now, Kin Moy has acted like a 'shadow emperor,' constantly interfering in Taiwan's internal affairs, attempting to suppress political forces that oppose 'Taiwan independence' and uphold peace in the Taiwan Strait. He repeatedly stirs up trouble in the Taiwan Strait, supports the DPP authorities' separatist provocations, deliberately distorts the cross-strait 'status quo,' and spreads the notion of 'dialogue without preconditions' to ease constraints on the 'Taiwan independence' agenda. He continues to promote the 'porcupine strategy,' fabricates the 'hive' concept, pressures Taiwan's legislative bodies to pass 'special defense budgets,' and advocates enhancing Taiwan's 'asymmetric warfare capabilities,' thereby 'handing knives to separatist forces,' continuously inciting confrontation across the strait, and attempting to turn Taiwan into a 'powder keg.'

'Kin Moy's words and actions violate President Trump's solemn statements, undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and attempt to steer China-U.S. and cross-strait relations toward an extremely dangerous direction. The U.S. should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, demand that relevant institutions and personnel cease spreading erroneous statements, stop fanning the flames and stirring up trouble in the Taiwan Strait, stop rallying allies to support 'Taiwan independence,' and cease sending wrong signals to separatist forces.'

In response, AIT stated that the U.S. commitment to Taiwan is strong and its policy unchanged. It hopes to see the current status quo maintained and reiterated its long-standing position supporting 'unconditional exchanges' between Beijing and Taiwan's democratically elected leaders.
