Stock Market Warning

Taiwan's stock market has recently experienced a sharp downturn, with conditions so severe they're being described as a 'bloodbath.' Many individual investors are sitting on unrealized losses and are uncertain whether to sell or buy more—this hesitation defines the current market sentiment.

In response, renowned Taiwanese investment advisor Tu Jin-Long has proposed 'four survival strategies' aimed at helping investors protect their assets and prepare for long-term recovery during volatile periods.

The first strategy is 'cash preservation.' Tu emphasizes, 'Liquidity is paramount during market instability.' By maintaining a reserve of cash, investors can avoid panic selling and position themselves to seize opportunities when quality stocks become undervalued.

Second is 'sector and stock diversification.' Concentrating investments in a single sector increases vulnerability when that sector underperforms. Tu advises, 'Avoid overexposure to tech stocks; instead, diversify into more stable sectors like consumer goods, healthcare, and infrastructure.'

Third is 'continuing dollar-cost averaging.' Instead of reacting emotionally to short-term fluctuations, investors should consistently invest fixed amounts at regular intervals. This method lowers the average cost per share over time and stabilizes long-term returns. Tu notes, 'Accurately timing the market bottom is impossible. That’s why mechanical, emotion-free investing is effective.'

Fourth is 'utilizing financial products with insurance features.' Incorporating principal-protected instruments or structured products that offer downside protection can help manage portfolio risk. These are especially suitable for conservative investors or those nearing retirement.

Tu concludes, 'Investing is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay committed to your strategy and don’t let short-term volatility derail your long-term goals.' In turbulent times, calm judgment and a forward-looking mindset are more critical than ever.
