All residents across Taiwan are advised to carry rain gear and apply sunscreen when heading out this weekend! The Central Weather Administration (CWA) released its latest weather forecast today (18th), indicating that due to southwest winds, moisture from the South China Sea is continuously being transported into the skies over Taiwan. On Sunday and Monday (19th–20th), central and southern regions will experience unstable weather. Later next week, tropical disturbances are likely to form near Guam, the eastern waters of the Philippines, and the South China Sea, and close monitoring is required to determine if they develop into typhoons.

Tomorrow's Weather: Central and Southern Taiwan to Face Frequent Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain – Beware of Short-Duration Torrential Rain in Mountainous Areas

CWA forecaster Lin Ding-yi stated that Taiwan is currently located at the western edge of the Pacific high-pressure system, primarily influenced by a southwest atmospheric flow. As a result, scattered short-duration showers or thunderstorms are expected in southern regions over the next two days, with a chance of localized heavy rain.

While southern areas will be most affected, central regions may also see isolated brief showers in the early morning to late morning due to a convergence effect between ambient winds and land breezes. Elsewhere, skies will mostly be partly cloudy to sunny during the day, but afternoon thunderstorms are expected in northern and central Taiwan and across mountainous areas island-wide. Localized heavy rain is possible, and mountainous areas in northern and central Taiwan may even experience short-duration torrential rain. Visitors to mountainous areas should remain highly vigilant.

Next Week's Weather: Two-Stage Rainfall Schedule and Affected Areas – Timing of Weather Changes Revealed

Stage One / Sunday to Monday (19th–20th): Southern Taiwan will experience intermittent thunderstorms and heavy rain. Central Taiwan may see scattered showers in the morning. Afternoon thunderstorms with potential for torrential rain are expected in northern and central Taiwan and all mountainous areas.

Stage Two / Tuesday to Friday (21st–24th): Most areas will return to partly cloudy to sunny conditions. However, afternoon thunderstorms may still occur in western Taiwan and other mountainous regions. There remains a chance of localized heavy rain in mountainous areas across the island.

Heat Alert: Temperatures to Exceed 36°C in Three Key Regions – UV Index May Reach Dangerous Levels

Regarding temperature and sun protection, Lin emphasized that Taiwan will remain hot and humid during rain-free periods over the next week. Daytime temperatures across the island will generally range from 32°C to 35°C.

Three regions are expected to experience extreme heat exceeding 36°C: areas north of Taoyuan, lowland areas and valleys near mountains in central and southern Taiwan, and the Hualien Valley. The CWA warned that UV radiation levels across Taiwan may reach “excessive” or even “dangerous” levels during midday. Residents are urged to apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Will a Typhoon Form Next Week? Will It Affect Taiwan?

Regarding the public’s concern about typhoon activity, the CWA noted that tropical disturbances are likely to develop later next week near Guam, the eastern waters of the Philippines, or the South China Sea. However, as these systems are currently far from Taiwan, their future intensity, exact tracks, and potential impact on Taiwan remain uncertain and require continuous monitoring and updated forecasts.
