U.S. President Trump has blamed Canada for wildfire smoke spreading across large parts of the United States, stating he will add the 'incalculable costs' of pollution to existing tariffs on Canadian goods. According to Reuters, thick smoke from hundreds of fires in Canada blanketed regions from the U.S. Midwest to the Northeast yesterday and today, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors. Clashing with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump said he would call the Canadian leader to ask how he intends to address this 'completely unacceptable' situation. On his social media platform 'Truth Social,' Trump wrote: 'We will hold Canada accountable for their poorly maintained forests… The U.S. is being unjustly invaded by dirty, polluted, and unhealthy air.'
'This is deliberate neglect, now an annual occurrence, costing the U.S. billions of dollars. The costs generated by this pollution must be added to the tariffs Canada is already paying,' he added.
However, climate experts point out that rising temperatures have made forests drier, leading to more frequent wildfires. Canada holds one of the largest forest areas in the world. Mike Flannigan, a professor studying forest fires at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, said: 'As the climate warms, we see hotter, drier, windier, and more extreme weather conditions that promote fire spread. We will continue to see more fires in the future.'
Trump imposed tariffs on several key Canadian imports shortly after taking office in 2025. Carney’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Yesterday, Carney stated that the U.S. could do more to combat climate change, which is raising global temperatures and making extreme heat events more frequent.
