The Kaohsiung City Police Department has released a traffic safety awareness video titled 'Little Police Anchor,' featuring 'Jiebao,' a cute virtual officer in a mini police uniform, using a childlike voice to explain the new driver's license renewal policy for elderly drivers. The video aims to raise public awareness about road safety for seniors, highlighting that starting May 31, 2026, the renewal age for elderly drivers will be lowered from 75 to 70.
In the video, Jiebao transforms into a young news anchor, using playful expressions and a sweet, childish voice to explain potential issues elderly drivers may face, such as declining vision, slower reaction times, and reduced judgment ability. She reminds seniors to stay focused and drive safely to prevent accidents and legal consequences. Jiebao also emphasizes the core message of the policy with the line: 'Renewing your license isn't a hassle—it's about helping seniors better understand their physical condition.'
To help the public clearly understand the new regulations, the Kaohsiung Police Department includes illustrated cards in the video. Drivers aged 70 to 74 can renew their licenses, valid until age 75, upon completing a physical examination and a road safety lecture. Drivers aged 75 and above must additionally pass a cognitive function test or submit relevant documentation, and must renew their licenses every three years thereafter.
The elderly license renewal system is designed to help seniors understand their health status through physical exams and cognitive assessments. The Kaohsiung City Police Department stresses that this policy is not intended to restrict seniors' mobility, but rather to assist them in understanding their health conditions, reduce traffic accident risks, and promote safer driving.
The police also urge families with seniors aged 70 and above to proactively accompany them during license renewal and traffic safety lectures. For those no longer fit to drive due to health conditions, they recommend using public transportation or relying on family for rides, collectively safeguarding the safety of elderly drivers and other road users.
