The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held its national party congress today (19th), where party delegates elected 30 Central Executive Committee (CEC) members from 35 candidates. Out of 585 valid votes, only one was invalid. Among the pro-Lai factions, New Tide secured 9 seats, Justice Alliance 4, Green Friendship 3, Yongyanhui 2, and Democratic Spring Water 2. On the non-pro-Lai side, the Ying faction won 4 seats, Su faction 3, Chen Ting-fei’s faction 2, and Chen Chi-mai’s faction 1. These 30 members will later elect 10 Central Standing Committee (CSC) members, forming the core decision-making body of the DPP. Notably, Yongyanhui fielded three candidates for the CEC: incumbent CSC member and legislator Wang Ding-yu, Keelung City Councilor Cheng Wen-ting, and Kaohsiung City Councilor Lin Chih-hung. Cheng Wen-ting narrowly missed election by just one vote. With Yongyanhui securing only two seats, and three being the threshold for influence, incumbent CSC member Wang Ding-yu may need cross-factional support to secure re-election. How many CEC seats did the pro-Lai factions win? Overall, New Tide fielded 10 candidates: incumbent CSC member and legislator Lin Chun-hsien, legislator Hsu Chih-chieh, Taipei City Councilor Chien Shu-pei, Taichung Councilor Lin Te-yu, Tainan Councilors Hsieh Shu-fan and Shen Chia-feng, Kaohsiung Councilor Huang Yen-yu, Pingtung Councilor Liang Yu-tzu, Taoyuan Councilor Huang Chia-chi, and former Taoyuan Civil Affairs Bureau Director Chen Ching-hang. Chen Ching-hang lost, giving New Tide 9 seats. Justice Alliance fielded 5 candidates: incumbent CSC member Chen Mao-song, Taipei council candidate Chang Ming-yu, Taoyuan Councilor Peng Chun-hao, Taichung Councilor Chang Chia-an, and Chiayi national delegate Chen Yu-ting. Chen Yu-ting lost, resulting in 4 seats. Yongyanhui’s three candidates—Wang Ding-yu, Cheng Wen-ting, and Lin Chih-hung—saw Cheng miss by one vote, leaving them with 2 seats. Green Friendship fielded three: CEC member Lin I-pang, Nantou delegate Li Jo-ching, and incumbent CSC member and Taipei Councilor Chung Pei-ling—all elected, securing 3 seats. Democratic Spring Water fielded two legislators, Chen Pei-yu and Lai Hui-yuan, both winning their seats. How did the non-pro-Lai factions fare? The Ying faction fielded six: incumbent CSC member and legislator Wang Shih-chien, legislator Chen Kuan-ting, incumbent CSC member and Taichung Councilor Chen Shu-hua, New Taipei Councilor Liao I-kun, CEC members Chuang Ya-fen and Chang Li-chen. Chang Li-chen and Chuang Ya-fen lost, giving the Ying faction 4 seats. The Su faction fielded three: incumbent CSC member and legislator Chang Hung-lu, former Central Review Committee member Lu Sun-fu, and Hsinchu Councilor Cheng Mei-chuan—all three won. Mayor Chen Chi-mai’s faction had one candidate, Kaohsiung Councilor Lee Yu-ting, who won. Chen Ting-fei’s faction fielded two: her sister Chen Yi-chen and Councilor Lee Wei-chih—both were elected.
