Global equity markets are under intensifying selling pressure, and Taiwan's stock market has recently plunged sharply. Last Friday, the index tumbled 2,953 points—setting a historic record—triggering panic among investors. Today (20th), the market swung wildly by over 1,100 points before closing down 221 points.

Bloomberg reports that after last Friday’s crash, Taiwan’s retail investors have been rapidly deleveraging at an unprecedented pace. The reduction in margin debt is even faster than during the U.S. tariff turmoil in April last year, becoming one of the key factors pushing the Taiwan stock market into technical correction.

The report highlights that Taiwan’s margin debt dropped by NT$27.6 billion in a single day—the largest daily decline since former U.S. President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on 'Liberation Day' last April. Margin balances have now fallen 7% from their all-time high, down to $18.2 billion (approximately NT$589.8 billion), signaling weakening risk appetite among Taiwanese retail investors.

Taiwan’s stock market has been one of the best-performing global markets this year, with retail investors consistently acting as the primary buyers during market pullbacks, providing crucial support. However, as market volatility increases, investors are reducing their leveraged stock holdings, accelerating the pace of market deleveraging.

This retreat in margin financing reflects cooling risk appetite among retail investors. As leveraged positions shrink, investors must repay loans or sell shares, further amplifying downward pressure. Compared to its June peak, the TAIEX has now declined approximately 10%, entering a technical correction zone.

Additionally, TSMC’s latest earnings report has heightened market concerns over its high capital expenditures and weakening profit outlook, adding further pressure on the broader market. Given TSMC’s substantial weight in the index, its stock performance directly influences the overall market trend.
