Samuel Hsieh, 74, honorary vice chairman of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), was urgently hospitalized due to sudden health deterioration and underwent craniotomy. His eldest son, Hsu Hsuang-yu, posted on Facebook today (20th) that his father’s condition has fully stabilized—eyes open and able to voluntarily move both legs upon command. There are currently no obvious signs of disability or severe aftereffects, but he continues to be monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU). The primary focus of treatment moving forward will be preventing re-bleeding and managing pre-existing chronic heart failure.
Hsu Hsuang-yu stated that his father underwent approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes of craniotomy yesterday morning, successfully relieving intracranial pressure. The surgery removed around 160ml of accumulated blood—both old hematoma from a golf-related fall last month and fresh clots from a recent blow to the back of the head. Samuel Hsieh is currently recovering in the ICU. Hsu emphasized that while the risk of long-term disability appears low, preventing re-bleeding and managing his father’s chronic heart failure—exacerbated by pre-existing conditions—will be the main therapeutic challenges.
Hsu explained that his father has nearly ten stents implanted in his heart and is on anticoagulant medication, making him highly susceptible to bleeding from any impact. Finally, Hsu expressed gratitude on behalf of his family: 'On behalf of my mother, sister, grandchildren, son-in-law, and daughters-in-law, thank you all for your care and encouragement. The collective power of humanity can overcome everything and create infinite miracles. We pray once again that Dad’s bleeding stops and that he recovers safely.'
Hsu added, 'Yesterday was a miraculous blessing from heaven—waves of blessings allowed Dad to rest and recover well. We thank God and all deities for protecting him. Friends and family have cheered, encouraged, and prayed for Dad. It’s a force beyond human strength that has transformed his 74-year-old brain. Though one person may seem small, in this world, everyone can become a pivotal force of infinite possibility in the universe.'
