In preparation for the '2027 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Miaoli,' the Miaoli County Government has organized four sessions of lantern-making workshops totaling 28 days during the summer vacation. The third session officially commenced this morning (20th) at the activity center of Toufen Elementary School, with the distinguished invitation of professional instructors from the Chinese Lantern Art Association.
County Magistrate Chung Tung-pin, accompanied by Deputy Director Peng De-jun of the Education Division and Councilor Hsiao Yung-hsuan, attended the event to encourage teachers and students. He also kindly provided refreshments to express appreciation for the approximately 250 participants—including teachers, students, and staff—from 30 schools across the county.
Magistrate Chung stated that hosting the 2027 Taiwan Lantern Festival is a shared honor for all Miaoli residents, with various county departments actively engaged in preparations. The lantern-making workshops not only carry the important mission of preserving traditional craftsmanship but also showcase Miaoli’s educational vitality and cultural creativity. The outcomes from the first two sessions have already demonstrated the participants’ meticulous craftsmanship and innovative thinking, setting a vibrant prelude to the festival.
Chung emphasized that these workshops go beyond technical transmission—they integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By incorporating environmental and sustainability concepts into material selection and design philosophy, traditional art is being connected with green aesthetics, transforming the workshops into a dynamic platform for environmental and aesthetic education.
Chung further noted that all lanterns created during the workshops will be showcased at the Miaoli HSR Lantern Zone during the 2027 Taiwan Lantern Festival. The county government hopes to warmly welcome visitors from around the world through exquisite lantern art that blends multicultural elements—including Hakka and Indigenous cultures—with sustainable design principles, inviting everyone to witness the brilliant moment when Miaoli lights up Taiwan.
Finally, Magistrate Chung expressed heartfelt gratitude to Li Tsung-kun, President of the Chinese Lantern Art Association, and instructor Lan Yung-chi for guiding participants in professional techniques such as frame construction, electrical wiring, and fabric covering. He also thanked the administrative teams from Tatung Elementary School, Tunghsiao Elementary School, Toufen Elementary School, and Shan-chia Elementary School for their thoughtful planning. Additionally, he commended all teachers and students for dedicating their summer break to the workshops, noting that each piece embodies Miaoli’s humanistic characteristics and educational spirit.
