Commuting in Taichung has become exceptionally elegant and moving this month, thanks to the 'Public Piano Experience' jointly hosted by the Taichung City Government Cultural Bureau and Taichung Metro. For the first time, the prized Fazioli F308 concert grand piano—valued at over ten million NTD and known as the 'Ferrari of Pianos'—has been moved from its usual home at Zhongshan Hall to the first-floor lobby of the City Hall MRT Station. From now until August 9, all citizens are invited to freely play the instrument.
Since the event began, it has drawn countless commuters, students, and tourists daily, turning the station into an open-air urban concert hall. The Cultural Bureau stated that bringing this high-end piano into a public transit space has amazed music lovers and sparked a warm musical wave among commuters.
Huang Yu-hsiang, lead actor of the film 'Touch of the Light,' heard about the event and made a surprise appearance last weekend, performing an impromptu set. His melodious playing captivated the crowd, with many exclaiming, 'This is truly the most romantic encounter on my commute!' People of all ages have taken turns at the piano, creating melodies unique to Taichung.
Ms. Chang, a regular Taichung Metro commuter, shared her delight: 'These past few days, I’ve been greeted by different piano performances as soon as I enter the first-floor lobby—sometimes classical, sometimes pop. My daily fatigue instantly melts away.' A student from Taichung Industrial High School’s light music club, now on summer break, said excitedly, 'I never thought I’d see a world-class piano at Taichung Metro!' He joined in the playing, drawing attention from passersby.
In addition to live performances, the city has launched the 'Taichung Metro Melodies' online short video contest. Participants can record a 15-second or longer performance on-site, upload it to their Instagram with the hashtags #千萬琴音在台中 and #中捷琴聲, and stand a chance to win attractive prizes. All music lovers are encouraged to seize this opportunity to perform.
To ensure the piano performs flawlessly in the bustling metro environment, Taichung Metro and the Cultural Bureau have placed it in a sheltered, sun-free area that does not obstruct passenger flow, harmonizing art with transit functionality. On-site security personnel manage order, distribute numbered tickets, display clear usage rules, limit playing time to five minutes per person, and provide a QR code linking to a video explaining the rules.
Players are instructed to remove sharp accessories like watches, bracelets, and rings before playing. Carrying personal bags or any beverages and liquids onto the stage is strictly prohibited to protect the precious instrument.
The event also consulted experts from the piano’s official distributor. Electric fans ensure proper air circulation, and a hygrometer triggers dehumidifiers when humidity rises. After the daily 10 PM closing, staff carefully cover the piano with a specialized key cover and dust-proof casing, ensuring full protection even during unattended nighttime hours.
The Cultural Bureau added that other public piano events are ongoing during summer. Tun District Cultural Center offers access from July 22 to August 19 (except Mondays), 9 AM to 5 PM. Huludun Cultural Center is open from August 1 to 30 (except Mondays), 2 PM to 4 PM daily, and 10 AM to 12 PM and 2 PM to 4 PM on Saturdays. The Steinway grand piano at Taichung Zhongshan Hall is available from July 22 to 24, 9 AM to 8 PM. Each session is limited to five minutes. The public is encouraged to participate while respecting the rules and preserving the instruments, fostering a friendly, shared cultural environment.
