Temperatures continue to soar, with hot and humid weather prevailing across Taiwan. However, meteorological experts warn that a tropical system is already brewing over the ocean. Jia Hsin-hsing, Director of Taiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention Engineering Consultants, stated today (21st) that the tropical system east of the Philippines is developing actively and has the potential to become a typhoon within the next 10 days. The period from July 24 to 25, when it passes south of Taiwan, will be the critical window to determine whether the system intensifies. If the tropical system develops successfully, its outer moisture will move northward first, bringing significant rainfall to eastern Taiwan and southern regions.
When will the tropical system strengthen? Key timing for typhoon development revealed
Meteorological expert Jia Hsin-hsing analyzed the latest observational data, indicating that the tropical system east of the Philippines will remain in a crucial development phase over the next 10 days, especially on July 24–25. As the system gains strength, its outer moisture will gradually move northward with the airflow. Eastern and southern Taiwan will be the first affected areas, and the public should closely monitor the latest updates.
Where will the rainfall hotspots be? Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung to see the most significant rain over the next few days
Regarding rainfall distribution, on July 24, afternoon rains will mainly concentrate in mountainous areas south of Taoyuan and regions south of Chiayi. From the evening of July 24 to July 26, as outer moisture from the tropical system moves in, rainfall in Hualien, Taitung, and eastern Pingtung will gradually intensify, with a chance of localized brief showers.
On July 25, Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung will become the most significantly affected areas, with scattered brief rains also possible in the Northeast Coast, Yilan, and regions south of Hsinchu. On July 26, affected areas shift to regions south of Changhua and the Hualien-Taitung area, with possible localized afternoon showers in western lowlands.
What will the weather be like over the next week? Hot conditions to persist until the end of the month
In the short term, from July 22 to 23, Taiwan will remain hot and humid. Scattered brief morning rains may occur in western areas, while mountainous regions across the island will be prone to localized afternoon thunderstorms. Other lowland areas may also experience isolated rainfall.
From July 27 to 30, Taiwan will maintain a typical summer weather pattern, with localized brief rains along the Taitung to Hengchun Peninsula region. Afternoon thunderstorms will still need to be monitored in western Taiwan, Hualien, and some mountainous areas.
Taiwan enters typhoon season! Any other tropical systems before month-end?
In addition to the tropical system to watch from July 24–25, Jia Hsin-hsing added that from July 28 to the end of the month, there is also a trend for other tropical systems to develop further east over the ocean. Taiwan has now fully entered typhoon season. Besides taking sun protection and heatstroke prevention measures when going out, the public should also inspect their typhoon preparedness equipment in advance and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
