Widely recognized by the engineering community as the most difficult project in Taipei Metro's construction history, the Xinyi Line Eastern Extension has finally reached a major milestone after nearly a decade of arduous construction and rigorous testing since its official groundbreaking in 2016. The route primarily runs beneath Fude Street, where construction teams had to navigate through both extremely hard rock formations and soft clay layers underground—presenting immense technical challenges due to the complex geological conditions.
In addition to geological difficulties, the terminal station, Guangci/Fengtiangong Station, required an exceptionally large excavation to meet future operational scheduling needs. The station's footprint is nearly twice the size of a standard metro station. After years of effort, the metro engineering team has overcome numerous geological and construction constraints and successfully passed multiple rigorous train tests, marking a new phase in project progress.
Will riding habits change? Can passengers board or alight at Guangci/Fengtiangong Station?
Taipei Metro has announced that the Xinyi Line Eastern Extension will officially enter trial operation starting July 23. During this trial phase, trains on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line will extend their departure point and begin operations from Guangci/Fengtiangong Station. However, commuters and the public are strongly reminded that Guangci/Fengtiangong Station is currently designated solely for train dispatching and trial operations—passenger boarding and alighting will NOT be permitted.
All boarding and alighting for Tamsui-Xinyi Line passengers will continue to take place at Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station. Upon arrival at the terminal station, passengers must follow station staff instructions to disembark, allowing the train to proceed further to Guangci/Fengtiangong Station for scheduling and testing. Remaining on board by mistake could disrupt overall operations.
Commuters should leave earlier! Are there adjustments during weekday peak hours?
With the start of trial operations, some train arrival times during weekday peak hours on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line will be slightly adjusted, with expected time shifts of approximately 1 to 2 minutes. Taipei Metro advises daily commuters and students relying on this line to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra waiting time to avoid delays due to minor schedule changes.
To help passengers stay informed in real time, the latest timetable updates have already been published on the official Taipei Metro website and at all stations. Passengers are also encouraged to use the 'Taipei Metro Go' mobile app to check real-time train arrival information and stay updated on the latest travel details.
